  • Swettenham's Lofty Procurement Deepens 2024 Roster

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
In February this year, Swettenham Stud secured one of the best bred and performed stallions to ever go to stud in Australia. Lofty Strike is a son of multiple Champion 2YO Sire Snitzel, out of Overreach, herself a Champion 2YO and winner of the Gr1 Golden Slipper. Boasting a rare pedigree – he is also closely related to Gr1 Blue Diamond winner Reward for Effort – Lofty Strike was an undefeated Group winner at 2, defeating the likes of Daumier and Jacquinot in the Gr.3 Blue Diamond Prelude before being controversially scratched from the Gr1 Blue Diamond – a race subsequently won by Daumier, whom he'd beaten by a couple of lengths the start prior. In just 12 starts, Lofty Strike defeated an incredible 19 Group 1 winners and 60 stakes winners, including the likes of Jacquinot, I Wish I Win, Private Eye, Coolangatta, Mazu, Masked Crusader, Roch 'n' Horse, Bella Nipotina and Chain Of Lightning. Lofty Strike will stand at an introductory fee of $22,000 inc GST with significant interest already from highly commercial breeders.

  • Stalwart Anchors Balance of Swettenham's Line Up

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
In 2024, Swettenham Stud's headliner Toronadoasserted himself as the number one active sire in Hong Kong, courtesy of the Group 1 success of Victor The Winner and emerging superstar Helios Express. High Chaparral's classy sire-son continues to rise up the stallion ranks. This season Toronado has produced more Australian winners than ever before and is currently ahead of superstar sires Snitzel and So You Think for winners. Toronado will remain at a fee of $88,000 inc GST, a decision that was not taken lightly as the stallion continues to reach new levels. Boom sire Wootton Bassett's blazingly fast son Wooded returns to Swettenham following the sale of his half-sister in 2024 for €2.4 million. Longchamp's Gr1 Prix de l'Abbaye (1000m) hero, who is a full-brother to last year's dominant Gr1 winning 2YO Bucanero Fuerte, remains at $22,000. Blue-blooded Group 1 sire Rubick ($27,500 inc GST) was Victoria's leading sire of 3YO on earnings, wins and stakes wins last season, and he has continued on his successes this season with Erno's Cube winning the Gr2 Reisling Stakes. In fact, Toronado ($88,000) and Written Tycoon (Private) are the only Victorian sires with more winners than Rubick this season. I Am Invincible's dual Stakes winning 2YO son I Am Immortal covered his largest book to date last season in his 4th year at stud on the back of some very positive feedback from trainers. From only a handful of runners, I Am Immortal has produced impressive debut winner I Am Velvet and stakes-placed filly Immortal Star, who defeated eventual Group 1 winner Broadsiding back in February. The Invincible Spirit line is in high demand and I Am Immortal presents as a value outcross with enormous upside as his first runners continue to hit the track. He will stand again for $13,750 inc GST. Also standing again is Puissance De Lune, a son of the influential Shamardal (USA), who will be available at a reduced fee of $8,800 inc GST. The talented grey has been represented by 183 runners, resulting in 93 individual winners of 246 races, including four stakes winners. Showing remarkable versatility, Puissance De Lune has produced winners in the distance range of 955 to 2600 metres.

  • Seonee's Success Highlights Winning Rupert

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
A crystal ball could not have predicted the surge of Group winners sired by Winning Rupert since it was announced he would be crossing the continent to stand at Geisel Park Stud, reports tbwa.net.au. Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon-Winaura, by Show A Heart) had been bereft of black-type this season prior to the autumn carnivals. Yet, as if on cue, Seonee went top of the class defeating Lady Jones (Toronado) and Silent Surrente (Fiorente) in the Gr2 Queen of the South Stakes (1600m), ridden by jockey Paddy Payne. Seonee (Winning Rupert–Mowgli, by Not A Single Doubt) is raced by a Prime Thoroughbreds syndicate and manager Joe O'Neill led a large travelling cheer-squad in Adelaide. Her next step will likely be the LR Centaurea Stakes (2000m) at Morphettville on May 11 before an intended trip north culminating in the Gr1 Tatt's Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm in June. "She's done a great job and Paddy has brought her along gently, let her develop, didn't push and look what we have today. Brisbane is still a maybe if we decide to go that far otherwise we can put her away," said O'Neill. He conceded, "We just don't know how far she can take us.  She's a lot stronger now and, who knows, next year it could be the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill." An $80,000 graduate from Yarraman Park Stud at the 2021 Gold Coast Magic Millions, Seonee has now earned $592,000.

  • O'Brien Poised for British Hall of Fame Induction

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O'Brien is set to receive a prestigious honor as he joins the esteemed ranks of the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame during the QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket this Saturday, according to TDN. This recognition places him alongside legendary figures like his predecessor at Ballydoyle, Vincent O'Brien, as well as Sir Michael Stoute and Sir Henry Cecil, marking him as the fourth trainer to earn this distinction in British Flat racing since the Hall of Fame's establishment in 2021. Expressing his gratitude, O'Brien remarked, "It is incredible, and a privilege for us, as it is something we would never have expected. The people, and horses, that have gone before us I feel very privileged to have worked with. I can't say how delighted, and honoured, I feel." This acknowledgment comes as no surprise given O'Brien's illustrious career. Having made his mark early on, he secured his first training victory with Wandering Thoughts (Ire) at Tralee on June 7, 1993. Initially recognized for his prowess in training jumpers, O'Brien transitioned to flat racing and quickly ascended to dominance. Since then, O'Brien has amassed a remarkable list of achievements, including becoming the youngest winner of the Irish Flat Trainers' Championship at the age of 26. He has consistently claimed titles both in Ireland and Britain, boasting an impressive record of nine Derby victories and numerous wins in other prestigious races like the 2,000 Guineas and the Oaks. In 2017, O'Brien set a new benchmark in training excellence with a world record of 28 Group/Grade 1 winners in a calendar year, solidifying his status as one of the greatest trainers in the sport's history.
  • Pencarrow Pair to Tackle Queensland Oaks

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
A pair of Pencarrow Stud homebreds is on target for a dual classic attack during the Brisbane winter carnival, according to NZ Racing Desk. The progressive Tomodachi carries the familiar silks of farm principal Sir Peter Vela, who also bred and shares in the ownership of another last-start winner in Waikato Girl. Both fillies are likely contenders for the Gr1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) with the former a daughter of Tarzino, who completed a hat-trick of wins for trainers Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott at Te Rapa on Saturday. The Michael Freedman-prepared Waikato Girl was successful for the second time in seven appearances when the Savabeel 3YO claimed the Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm at her most recent outing. Tomodachi put forward a compelling case for a trip to Brisbane with her weekend victory over 1600m. There is also a family history of success in Brisbane with third dam Ethereal an Oaks winner before later claiming Group 1 honours in the Melbourne Cup (3200m), Caulfield Cup (2400m) and the BMW Stakes (2400m). Retained Tomodachi is out of the High Chaparral mare Quintessentially, a three-time winning daughter of the Gr1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) runner-up Uberalles. Waikato Girl was purchased out of Pencarrow's 2022 draft at New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sale by agent Michael Wallace for $600,000 on behalf of the Boston-based Kuldeep Singh Rajput's Gandharvi operation, with Pencarrow retaining a percentage in her. She is out of the Irish-bred Galileo mare Scintillula, who won the Gr3 Meld Stakes (1800m) and finished runner-up in the Gr1 Moyglare Stud Stakes (1400m).

  • Press Link Expected to Bounce Back after Loss

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
Promising Queensland 3YO Press Link tasted defeat for the first time at his final Queensland Guineas lead-up, but trainer Robert Heathcote is confident the gelding can bounce back in this Saturday's Group 2 at Eagle Farm, reports racingqueensland.com.au. Press Link (Press Statement-Villa De Madrid, by Mossman) finished third, beaten 2.25-lengths by Exotique Miss in the Listed Daybreak Lover Plate (1400m) on April 20, but Heathcote said there was plenty of merit to the run. "We were back and the two that beat me home were up on the speed, which, I think it was an advantage to be up on the speed in that particular race. I think up over the mile it might be a different story," Heathcote said. He set his sights on the $350,000 Queensland Guineas immediately after that race and is confident Press Link will derive great improvement from his most recent outing and is hoping the showers predicted for Brisbane on Friday and Saturday stay away. Heathcote observed "He hadn't run for a month…I think, because the track was a bit shifty, he couldn't get firm footing. He has a really good turn of foot, but we never got to see it." Press Link had won his previous three starts, beginning with a 1200m midweek maiden success at Doomben in November. He was one of 26 nominations for the Queensland Guineas, in which last-start Sydney Carnival winners Ducasse, Kintyre and Panic are potential rivals.
  • Burke Has Two UK Classic Weekend Contenders

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
UK Trainer Karl Burke has two strong contenders – one for each of the UK Classics this weekend, reports racingpost.com. He has Night Raider (Dark Angel-Dorraar, by Shamardal) in the Gr1 2000 Guineas on Saturday and Fallen Angel (Too Darn Hot-Agnes Stewart, by Lawman) in the Gr1 1000 Guineas on Sunday. "He [has] a lot of potential and a lot of ability and I don't think I've seen a horse work better in the 23 years we've been at Middleham," said Burke of Night Raider. "He's got an awfully high cruising speed and he can quicken off it as well. Clifford Lee rode him for the first time in a long time and said it was like driving a car with ten gears. Every time you move on him he goes forward. Danny Tudhope loves him and I wouldn't mind having a bet that there's nothing travelling any better than him a furlong and a half out and we'll see what we do after that." He is one of fourteen horses for the 2000 Guineas aiming to topple favourite City Of Troy (Justify-Together Forever, by Galileo), and he is unbeaten in two starts to date. Fallen Angel is the current favourite for the 1000 Guineas, and Burke said, "I think they've got us to beat. I know Ballydoyle will give you plenty of excuses for Ylang Ylang's defeat in the Moyglare but she's got more than ten lengths to make up on us. On all known form I think we deserve to be favourite." Fallen Angel won three of her four starts at two and has yet to run at three.

  • Fernie’s Dynamic Duo Prepped for Adelaide

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
An influx of Western Australian raiders for Adelaide’s racing carnival has grown with Luke Fernie set to target black-type races with two of his stable stand outs, reports rwwa.com.au. Quality mare Laced Up Heels confirmed a second interstate trip following another top run Ascot on Saturday and Be Optimistic is poised to return after a breakout campaign. Laced Up Heels (Toronado-A City Girl, by Exceed And Excel) continued her sharp improvement after coming back winless from a Melbourne campaign and taking time to recover from a couple of minor issues. She ran a close second to Sapphire Street in the Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic (1400m) on the weekend, her second straight runner-up finish after The Joey (1200m). “Laced Up Heels will go to the Gr3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m)…there’s no real races for her here unless she just goes to rating races, but if she was to come out and win that will be something we play by ear,” Fernie told The Races WA. With a flurry of stars and impressive up and comers from his stable, Be Optimistic (Blackfriars-Mekies Dream, by Pluck) has been a genuine but pleasant surprise packet. She gave Fernie one of his best moments in racing when taking out his hometown Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) last October. She later progressed to win the Listed Scahill Stakes (2100m) at Ascot and ended a top period of racing with a runner-up finish in the Perth Cup (2400m). Fernie advised, “The Cummings Stakes is for Be Optimistic. She’ll have the one run there and come back for the end of the weight for age races here.” Fernie hopes to secure the services of champion jockey Damian Lane for Laced Up Heels and Be Optimistic.

  • Another Queensland Carnival Tilt Inevitable

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
Renowned two-time Ladbrokes Tasmanian Horse of the Year, The Inevitable, is gearing up for another interstate venture, following a spirited grass gallop in Hobart last Sunday, reports tasracing.com.au. Guided by trainer John Keys, the seasoned 8YO son of Dundeel is bound for Queensland. The target is the Gr3 BRC Sprint, a 1300m challenge at Doomben on May 25th, followed by the prestigious Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on June 15th. Despite a lukewarm performance in the recent Ladbrokes Summer Racing Festival, where he clinched second in the Conquering Stakes and fourth in the Tasmanian Stakes, The Inevitable has regained his stride, much to the satisfaction of his trainer. "His Sunday gallop showcased his form admirably, and we're all set for Queensland come Tuesday," Keys remarked. "The veterinary assessment was overwhelmingly positive, indicating he's in prime condition for the journey ahead." During Sunday's training session, The Inevitable was joined by stablemate Naval Anthem, who, along with Tsunami Sam, will accompany him northward from the Keys stable. Keys anticipates inclement weather in Queensland in the forthcoming months and assures that the equine trio selected for the journey are well-equipped to handle such conditions. Last year, The Inevitable had his sights set on the $3,000,000 Stradbroke Handicap, only to be sidelined due to a minor setback following his commendable third-place finish in the 2023 All-Star Mile.

  • Super Easy Takes Up Residence at Roselee Park

    Thursday, 2nd May 2024
Former Hallmark Stud stallion Super Easy has arrived at Roselee Park in Western Australia where he will stand for an introductory service fee of $5,500 (inc GST), reports tbwa.net.au. Perth trainer Brock Lewthwaite signed Super Easy (Darci Brahma-Parfore, by Gold Brose) to join King's Troop at the Serpentine-based stud operated by Wayne and Tracy Rodwell. "Super Easy will have his old paddock and it's a timely transfer with his mare Bonny Lass winning the Group 1 BCD Sprint at Te Rapa in February," Lewthwaite said. Super Easy came to hand as an early-season 2YO winning on debut at Trentham for trainer John Sargeant, prior to going down a nose in the Gr2 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie. He took Singapore by storm winning 9 Listed-level races on the way to back-to-back Horse Of The Year Awards for trainer Michael Freedman and the Joy N Happiness Stable. Champion jockey Joao Moreira, who rode Super Easy in the LR 3YO Sprint at Kranji, added, "I've won Derby races and Cup races on some very good horses but this horse is something special. Right from Day 1 he has given me that special feel and riding him in his races is such a pleasure." Super Easy has sired over 100 individual winners of 300 races, and apart from Bonny Lass, his Stakes winners include Prom Queen, Sheezallmine, Super Strike & Spine Tingle in New Zealand and Easy Eddie (Gr3 ATC Maurice McCarten Hcp) & Dream Queen (LR MVRC William Crockett Stakes) in Australia.
