MM 2YOs Impress at New Seymour TrackMonday, 25th September 2017The new fibre sand track at Seymour received a glowing endorsement after the running of the Victorian breeze-ups for next month's Magic Millions 2YOs in Training Sale at the Gold Coast. In total, 45 juveniles were put through their paces with 26 running sub-11 second sectionals recorded for the 200 metre breeze. A filly by Eurozone stopped the clock in the day's quickest breeze – running 10.37 seconds. Catalogued as Lot 249, the filly is a member of the quality draft from Rosemont Stud. "More than half of all breeze up lots broke 11 seconds and I'm confident there will be another Group One winner among the line-up – just like Capital Gain last year," Magic Millions' Tim Brown said. Attention now switches to the Gold Coast Turf Club which hosts approximately 150 lots breezing today (from 9.30am) before another session at Warwick Farm in Sydney on Tuesday (from 9am). All breeze up sessions are streamed online via the live broadcast section of the Magic Millions website. The 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs in Training Sale will be held on October 10 and 11. At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, Arrowfield Stud's incumbent Champion Australian Sire Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) celebrated an elite race success when 3YO brown colt Trapeze Artist (Snitzel-Treppes, by Domesday) scored an upset win at odds of 40-1 when powering clear at the top of the straight for a dominant win in the $1 million Gr1 Golden Rose (1400m) for 3YOs, defeating Champagne Cuddles & Menari. Trainer Gerald Ryan said Trapeze Artist could back up in Saturday's Gr1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick where he will carry just 48kg. "I wasn't surprised. I have been saying for two weeks this horse has been flying under the radar," Ryan said. "He was aimed at this race and he's done the job today." Ryan said Trapeze Artist would now be aimed at the the stallion-making Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on 4 November. Hot favourite Menari was galloped on and lost a plate but Ryan refused to use that as an excuse for the colt's defeat. Trapeze Artist improved his record to 3 wins (including the Gr3 Black Opal Stakes) and 1 placing (the Gr1 Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes) from 8 starts for $957,750 in earnings. Hailing from the female family of Gr1 winners Crawl and Boardwalk Angel, Trapeze Artist was passed in for $250,000 at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Vieira Group. Blinkers for Brave SmashMonday, 25th September 2017The connections of Brave Smash are confident the former Japanese galloper is still a leading contender for The Everest despite his loss at Caulfield on Saturday. The Darren Weir-trained Brave Smash was sent out as the dominant $1.65 favourite in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) but was gunned down by the progressive Ciaron Maher-trained Bons Away. “I wasn’t really unhappy with the run. If you watch the run again, he didn’t have the kindest run and everyone saw that, but I think he is going to be a horse who will appreciate blinkers,” Australian Bloodstock’s Luke Murrell told ANZ Bloodstock News. “He got to the eventual winner and wanted to run with him and look at him after the post. He has almost stopped when the jockey eases up on him. That is his major issue, but we knew that going into the race on Saturday.” Murrell added: “He will have blinkers on and a properly run 1200 metres in The Everest, which will be right up his alley.” Brave Smash will represent slot holder the Australian Turf Club in the inaugural $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 14 October.

Ulysses to Stand at Cheveley ParkMonday, 25th September 2017Classically bred dual Group One winner Ulysses (Galileo-Light Shift, by Kingmambo) will stand at Cheveley Park Stud in the UK when he retires at the end of this season. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute on behalf of the Niarchos family's Flaxman Stables, Ulysses has hitherto won 5 of his 12 starts for earnings in excess of £1.4 million. Already a winner of the Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes and Gr1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes, Ulysses will bid to triple his Gr1 tally when he lines up in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Sunday. Dubawi's Emaraaty Wins MaidenMonday, 25th September 2017Valuable Shadwell colt Emaraaty broke his maiden when scoring a powerful win in the Wedgewood Estates EBF Novice Stakes (7 furlongs) at Newbury in the UK on Saturday. The equal highest selling lot of the 2016 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale when fetching 2.6 million guineas, Emaraaty is by Darley's world-class sire Dubawi out of Gr1 Prix de l'Opera winner Zee Zee Top (Zafonic-Colorspin, by High Top). This makes Emaraaty a direct descendant of outstanding producer Reprocolor, one of the foundation mares of the Weinfeld family's Meon Valley Stud in England. This is the family of European Classic winners Cezanne, Colorspin, Kayf Tara, Opera House, Zee Zee Top, and Gr1 Prix de l'Opera runner-up Jazzi Top. Trainer John Gosden nominated the Gr3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury in April as suitable target, which necessarily implies he thinks the blue blood is a 2,000 Guineas prospect. "He is a very promising horse costing all that money and he has a bit of class about him. We will see if he runs again this year or whether we wait for the spring. He certainly has a lot of natural speed," Gosden said.
Record Keeneland Sept Sale ConcludesMonday, 25th September 2017Keeneland’s 12-day September Yearling Sale concluded on Saturday with gross receipts above $300 million for the first time since 2008. The sale also produced record average and median prices and the sale of 13 seven-figure horses. Gross sales of US$307,845,400 increased 12.81 percent over 2016 by surpassing last year’s 13-day auction total of US$272,890,500 on the seventh day of selling. Total sales represent the highest gross since the 15-day September Sale in 2008 when 3,605 horses sold for US$327,999,100. The average rose 23.27 percent from US$97,740 to US$120,487, smashing the previous September Sale record of US$112,427 set in 2006, while the median of US$57,000 increased 42.50 percent from last year. The previous record median of US$50,000 was set during the 2013-2015 September Sale. “The September Sale exceeded expectations in every aspect,” Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston said. “The sales grounds were electric from Day 1 and that enthusiasm to buy racehorses never waned, even into the final days of the sale.” The sale topper was the Tapit full sister to Gr1 Santa Anita Gold Cup winner Cupid which went to M.V. Magnier for US$2.7 million.
