Wednesday, 16th January 2013

While champion mare Black Caviar and triple Gr1-winning gelding Hay List (Statue Of Liberty-Sing Hallelujah, by Is It True) topped the Turf Sprint division, Australian-bred horses also filled the next 5 spots with dual Gr1-winners Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock-Regard, by Zabeel), Rocket Man (Viscount-Macrosa, by McGinty) & 4-time Gr1 winner Sepoy (Elusive Quality-Watchful, by Danehill) each achieving a 122 mark. Just shy of this rating were Gr1 William Reid Stakes winner Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) & Gr1 Patinack Classic winner Mental (Lonhro-Intrigues, by Night Shift) on 121.

Magic Millions GC Day-3: $800,000 Redoute's Choice Colt

Monday, 14th January 2013

The top-selling yearling on Day-3 of the 4-day Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale was almost pinched with a 'one-bid' move by agent James Harron, however was knocked down for $800,000 to Sydney trainer John O'Shea who only had to fire back with one bid of his own to win the auction battle for a Redoute's Choice colt out of Gr1 winner Apercu. Consigned by Newgate Farm, the colt is his dam's first, and O'Shea was delighted with the buy: "He's the best Redoute's Choice (yearling) I have seen in a long time... The best since Fast 'n' Famous. He is a very nice colt."

Magic Millions GC Day-1: Freshman Wanted

Thursday, 10th January 2013

It is very rare to see a freshman stallion sit near the top of the leader-board at a major sale, but after Day-1 of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, Eliza Park's much hyped Gr1 Newmarket Handicap-winning stallion Wanted (Fastnet Rock-Fragments, by Snippets) is ironically only $40,000 shy of his red-hot father following the sale of his colt from Gr2 Magic Night Stakes winner Regal Arena (Arena-Regal Chamber, by Archregent) for $460,000 in the twilight of the opening session. Purchased by the astute Hong Kong based George Moore Bloodstock, the sale is not only a coup for Eliza Park but also represents a healthy return for vendor Newgate Farm who bought the colt from the 2012 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale draft of Eliza Park for $255,000. The Regal Arena colt was one of 3 yearlings by Wanted to reach triple figures on the opening day.

Foxwedge UK Fee Set At £7,500

Monday, 5th November 2012

Meanwhile, the debut fee for Hunter Valley-based Newgate Farm's reverse shuttler Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) has been set at £7,500 by Whitsbury Manor Stud, reports racingpost.com. The Hampshire-based property is the first stud farm in the northern hemisphere to stand a son of last year's Australian Champion Sire Fastnet Rock. Whitsbury's Ed Harper enthused: "Our new recruit from Australia, Foxwedge, is the highest-rated son of Fastnet Rock. "I believe he offers immensely good value considering his exceptional race record, champion's pedigree and the fact that he will be limited to 120 mares."

Sea Siren In Tune For Manikato

Wednesday, 24th October 2012

Meanwhile, valuable dual Gr1-winning 4YO mare Sea Siren (Fastnet Rock-Express A Smile, by Success Express) threw out the challenge to last start Gr2 Schillaci stakes-winning 5YO Buffering (Mossman-Action Annie, by Anabaa) for Friday night's Gr1 Manikato Stakes following an impressive gallop this morning at Moonee Valley, reports racenet.com.au. Trainer John O'Shea was impressed with her tractability around the tight circuit and commented: "In my experience with them, they either handle it the first time or it is just a waste of time with them ... The first time we brought Racing To Win here, he was a disaster and the Cox Plate was a disaster. We brought Foxwedge here, galloped him and he was brilliant. In his first crack here, he raced well ... She has come here for the first time and Jimmy [Cassidy] was very happy with her capacity to get around so I don't think the track will be an issue." In response to Sea Siren taking on Buffering first up at Gr1 level O'Shea remained confident, "She's very good early in her prep, if you go through her form so it's not an issue for her to be at that level at this stage."

Foxwedge To Reverse Shuttle To UK's Whitsbury Manor

Friday, 28th September 2012

Hunter Valley-based Newgate Farm's exciting young freshman sire Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) will shuttle to England's Whistbury Manor Stud for the 2013 season, reports smh.com.au. Newgate Farm principal Henry Field revealed: ''We were in a great position with offers to stand Foxwedge coming from America, Ireland and France, but after some considerable study by the syndicate members it was decided that Whitsbury Manor Stud was the best option.'' The cover stallion for Breeding&Racing's 2012 digital Sires Annual, Foxwedge will cover a maximum of 120 mares (150 in Australia) according to Field, who revealed his northern hemisphere fee will be £7,000. On the track, Foxwedge (a $925,000 yearling consigned by Luskin Park Stud at the 2010 Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney) retired with 5 wins (including March's Gr1 William Reid Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley, plus 2011's Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes over 1200m at Randwick & Gr3 San Domenico Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill) & 4 placings (including March's Gr1 Newmarket Handicap over 1200m at Flemington, plus 2011's Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes over 1200m at Flemington, Gr2 Todman Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill & Gr3 Run To The Rose over 1200m at Rosehill) from 12 starts for $942,450 earnings.

Thursday, 30th August 2012

Lexington-based sales company Fasig-Tipton is preparing an outstanding catalogue of mares for its annual November Sale to be held on November 5, many of which have pedigree links  to appeal to the Australasian market. Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr appealed to Australian buyers: "We have an outstanding catalogue in development that will include a large number of off the track race mares as well as several young mares in foal on their first covers that should really suit the Australasian broodmare owner… North American broodmares have punched well above their weight in Australasia as producers with the likes of Foxwedge, Anabandana, Smart Missile, Red Ruler, November Rain, Platinum Princess and So Pristine [all] recent group winners, which cannot be ignored by breeders or yearling buyers alike." The sale boasts an impressive line-up that includes 3-time Gr1 winner Havre de Grace (Saint Liam-Easter Bunnette, by Carson City), Gr1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Musical Romance (Concorde's Tune-Candlelightdinner, by Slew Gin Fizz), as well as the dams of Gr1 Kentucky Derby and Gr1 Preakness Stakes quinella I'll Have Another (Flower Alley-Arch's Gal Edith, by Arch) and Bodemeister (Empire Maker-Untouched Talent, by Storm Cat). She's A Fox Out Of Spring Features

Thursday, 23rd August 2012

She's a Fox (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) has a minor ligament strain in her knee and connections have decided to be cautious and send the boom 3YO filly for a spell for the remainder of the spring. Trainer Anthony Cummings told racenet.com.au, "She had a bit of a twinge in the back of the knee so we're taking the careful approach. In terms of her developing into what she can be, we decided to take the conservative view, give her the time and come back in the autumn. There are a lot of options for a filly like this in the autumn."  She's a Fox won the Listed The Rosebud at her previous start and is a full sister to recently retired Gr1 winner Foxwedge (standing at Newgate Farm).

Foxwedge Foundation Sire For Newgate Farm

Tuesday, 10th April 2012

Newgate Farm announced it has secured Gr1-winning & dual Gr1-placed 3YO colt Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) as its foundation sire. At his latest start, Foxwedge (the highest-ever rated son of former Australian Champion 2nd-Season Sire & multiple Gr1-winning Australian-bred stallion Fastnet Rock) defeated older rivals to win last month's Gr1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley. Foxwedge (a $925,000 yearling consigned by Luskin Park Stud at the 2010 Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney) currently boasts 5 wins (also including 2011's Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes over 1200m at Randwick & Gr3 San Domenico Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill) & 4 placings (including March's Gr1 Newmarket Handicap over 1200m at Flemington, plus 2011's Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes over 1200m at Flemington, Gr2 Todman Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill & Gr3 Run To The Rose over 1200m at Rosehill) from 12 starts for $942,450 earnings. Newgate's Hednry Field enthused: "Foxwedge was as good a physical specimen as I have ever seen as a yearling, as evidenced by his $925,000 sales price at the Inglis Easter yearling sale. His good looks, along with the fact that he is not only the highest-ever rated son of Fastnet Rock, but also a higher rated 3YO sprinter than Fastnet Rock himself, makes Foxwedge an incredibly exciting stallion prospect." Meanwhile Sydney owners Dr Edmund & Belinda Bateman will retain a 25% interest in Foxwedge, who will remain with trainer John O'Shea & be aimed at the UK Gr1 Kings Stand Stakes (6 furlongs) at Royal Ascot before retiring to Newgate Farm to serve his 1st mares in the 2012 Australian Spring.

Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale: US$245k Indian Charlie Filly

Wednesday, 9th February 2011

In the US auction ring, bloodstock agent & Select Sales partner Tom Ryan (acting for Australian Gavin Murphy's group of investors known collectively as SF Bloodstock) paid top price of US$245,000 for a yearling filly by Indian Charlie (out of winning & stakes-placed Matchlite mare Lady's Legacy) at the 1-day Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington. The filly was consigned by Gainesway & her sire Indian Charlie (who stands at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky for US$70,000) is the sire of US 2010 Champion 2YO Male Uncle Mo. The 1st foal produced by Lady's Legacy was stakes-winning Flying Chevron mare Shameful, who subsequently produced 5-time Gr1-winner Indian Blessing (also by Indian Charlie); Lady's Legacy has also produced stakes-winner Little Maath Man & stakes-placed Malibu Legacy. Ryan told bloodhorse.com: "She's obviously a beautiful filly by a proper stallion & she has lots of residual value. She has size, scope & strength; she's a queen. Everything adds up. She ticks all the boxes. We're buying her for our racing program. I was very surprised to see her in this sale. We're glad to own her. Any time you pay nearly a quarter of a million dollars for a yearling, it's a fair price." Gavin Murphy (an Australian working in New York City) & Australian bloodstock agent Neil Bowden founded SF Bloodstock "which has been very active recently in the broodmare market"; Australian Henry Field "is also involved in the venture".

In the latest issue of Breeding&Racing Magazine, staff researcher Belinda Howard spoke to many of the antipodean raiders - including Vin Cox, Wayne Bedggood, Jon Freyer, James Bester, John Kenneally, Steve Young, Henry Field, Peter Beer, Brett Howard & Steve Brem - to explain the reasoning behind their purchases.
