Thursday, 4th March 2010
Kentucky bloodstock agent John Moynihan (acting on behalf of Kendall-Jackson wine magnate Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables) out-bid Kaleem Shah (sitting with trainer Bob Baffert) to pay top price of US$2.3 million for a colt by former Grand Lodge Thoroughbreds shuttler Distorted Humor (out of multiple Gr1-winning 16-year-old A.P.Indy mare Tomisue's Delight) at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Select 2YOs-In-Training Sale at Calder Race Course in Miami. The colt's dam Tomisue's Delight is a half-sister to both US Horse-Of-The-Year & sire Mineshaft, plus Queensland-based Racetree Farm's Gr3-winning former Coolmore-Willowbend Stud shuttler Monashee Mountain. Moynihan told bloodhorse.com: "We're swinging for the fences (at that price) & I think we have the right kind of horse to do it with. The biggest reason we bought him was that even though we've got some nice horses at the farm, we didn't want to run against him. We love the horse. He just has it all. He has an amazing mind. He reminds me of (2007 & 2008 US Horse-Of-The-Year) Curlin." The Kentucky-bred colt (consigned by Stacy Yagoda & Jill Julian's new pin-hooking partnership Two Beaches) is a half-brother to last season's Gr1-winner Mr Sidney & clocked 10.6sec for 1 furlong during the pre-sale breeze-up session. Yagoda (formerly married to Florida pin-hooker Ricky Leppala) declared: "I'm finally even on wine! I've been supporting (Jackson) for years." Julian previously trained horses for (& was a long-time business partner of) another pin-hooker Carl Bowling & the 2 women purchased the Distorted Humor colt (in the name of On The Sly) for US$200,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling auction. Yagoda noted: "He was immature & fat, but he had all the right parts & he had presence"; she said the colt's price was sweet redemption adding: "We've had some hard years. There were lots of personal issues for us."

Juddmonte Sire Set Alight Joins Willowbend Roster

Wednesday, 2nd May 2007

David Lucas at Queensland's Willowbend Stud has secured the rights to stand Juddmonte Farm-bred Set Alight (Hennessy-Proflare, by Mr Prospector) in Australia. Lucas enthused: "This is an exceptional looking horse & I welcome people to the farm to inspect him as of late May." Earlier this year Lucas also announced US turf Gr1 winner Nothing To Lose (Sky Classic-Cherlindrea, by Clever Trick) would be joining resident stars Clang (Bellotto-Sudden Impulse, by Luskin Star) & Monashee Mountain (Danzig-Prospectors Delite, by Mr Prospector) at Willowbend. After winning 3 turf races against top competition as a 2YO in France (culminating in the Gr3 Thomas Bryon Stakes at Saint-Cloud), owner Prince Khalid Abdullah sent Set Alight to the US for the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile on dirt; but he was involved in a multiple-horse collision mid-race & spent 12 months on the sidelines. He returned to the track earlier this year as a North American 3YO (to determine his ability to handle dirt racing for a future stallion career in the US) but Garrett O'Rourke (who oversees Juddmonte Farms' North American operations) noted: "Set Alight's female family has become extremely important to Juddmonte & Prince Abdullah. The depth & quality is exceptional: it might be the best active turf sprinting family in the world right now. Remember, it does include Latent Heat who is probably the best sprinter in the Northern Hemisphere. It was obvious that Set Alight is a vastly more talented horse on the grass than on dirt. Since we do not have an operation in Australia, & Australia seemed the ideal spot, the Prince elected to accept this offer & retire Set Alight sound so he could go straight into quarantine." Set Alight's dam Proflare was a multiple juvenile winner (& stakes-placed in France on turf); & from her 11 foals to race, 10 are winners (6 at graded-stakes level). Importantly, she worked to produce stakes horses with 5 different stallion lines. Set Alight is also a half-brother to multiple Gr2 winner True Flare, rapidly becoming a superstar blue hen: her 4 foals are all black-type horses, including Latent Heat (a Gr-1 winner & currently top-ranked speedster in the US), Art Master (a sprinter-miler with 4 wins, three at Group level) & Indian Flare (a multiple Listed stakes-winner & Gr2-placed in her last start). Lucas summed up: "Set Alight's 1st dam alone would make any stallion book page on its own & I cannot wait to start breeding with him, because I just know he'll produce flying machines here!" Meanwhile his sire Hennessy's other son at stud in Australia is Coolmore shuttler Johannesburg, the current North American Freshman Champion Sire who is leading the Australian Freshman Table by number of individual winners.

Benson Buys US Gr1-Winning Sire Nothing To Lose

Thursday, 29th March 2007

In Australia, Emerald Thoroughbreds owner-breeder Bill Benson has purchased one of the world's most explosive Gr1-winning turf gallopers of recent years Nothing To Lose (Sky Classic-Cherlindrea, by Clever Trick) to stand this breeding season at David Lucas's Willowbend Stud in Queensland. Nothing To Lose won the US 2004 Gr1 Shadwell Mile (1600m on turf) at Keeneland in Kentucky; the Shadwell is the 2nd most prestigious turf mile in US racing & Nothing To Lose recorded an exceptionally fast Beyer Speed Figure of 111 in winning by 4-lengths (from a field including 4 other Gr1-winners). Nothing To Lose ended that season with a Timeform rating of 134: among the all-time highest ratings of any stallion ever to stand at stud in Australia. Nothing To Lose (a 6YO home-bred raced by Kentucky's high-profile Ken & Sarah Ramsey) has been purchased outright by Benson & Lucas, with Benson noting: "We are offering breeders the chance to buy into him. We have limited shares available at $15,000 each. That will give the owner 3 nominations in the 1st year, 2 in the 2nd year & 1 each year afterwards. That equates to $20,000 worth of free services for an outlay of $15,000. For a horse of this calibre, who is about the best looking animal I have ever seen, that is tremendous value." Nothing To Lose (who will stand on debut at Willowbend for $7,700) was retired by the Ramseys in December 2005 with 6 wins from 15 starts, also including the 2004 Gr2 Fourstardave Handicap (8.5 furlongs on turf) at Saratoga in 1min 39.5sec (just 0.6sec outside the course record), as well as both the 2003 Gr3 Tropical Park Derby & Gr3 Palm Beach Stakes (plus 4 stakes-placings, including the Gr1 Monmouth United Nations Stakes) for US$809,210 earnings. He was bought as a racing proposition by Victorian breeder-owner Walter Alteri & won a Cranbourne barrier trial before developing problems in his ankle; Alteri sold him to Benson as a stallion prospect only. Benson summed up: "He was a Champion racehorse by a Champion galloper in Sky Classic, who was a Champion 2YO-getter. So we really expect Nothing To Lose to get magnificent looking, precocious types who will win juvenile races. Race track performance has & will always be the greatest asset a stallion prospect has & this horse was a supreme star at the highest order." His sire Sky Classic (a Canadian track Champion) has produced 48 stakes-winners world-wide.
