Moody Retires Gr1 Oaks Heroine Lights Of Heaven

Thursday, 13th June 2013

In an announcement at Sportingbet Park yesterday afternoon, trainer Peter Moody confirmed that Gr1-winning 5YO mare Lights of Heaven (Zabeel-I'm In Heaven, by Volksraad) has been retired, reports racingnetwork.com.au. Moody acknowledged his decision was based on her retiring sound and with her racing goals achieved, commenting, "She has just done her job... She is a Gr1-winning filly, she's done a hell of a good job... She has just been a bloody good mare. She certainly would have been the flag bearer in any stable, mine included, [if] she didn't have Black Caviar in the stable." Lights of Heaven retires with immense residual value and a sterling record of 8 wins (including May's Gr2 Hollindale Stakes, the Gr3 Neville Sellwood Stakes, 2011's Gr1 Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville & the Gr2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley) & 7 placings (including 2012's Gr1 Caulfield Stakes, Gr1 Doomben Cup & Gr1 Caulfield Cup) from 23 starts for $1,575,488 earnings.

NZ Gr1 Winners Homeward Bound

Wednesday, 12th June 2013

Meanwhile, also in NZ, The Oaks Stud general manager, Rick Williams, has confirmed that Gr1 performers Zurella (Zabeel-Doneze Girl, by Volksraad) and Artistic (Darci Brahma-Artless, by Dahar) are returning to New Zealand to spell following their Brisbane Winter Carnival campaigns, reports nzracing.co.nz. Williams commented, "They'll both come home and have a spell and Zurella will likely target the Gr2 Let's Elope Stakes and the Gr1 Myer Classic during the Melbourne Spring Carnival... We'll keep her fresh over the shorter trips, as that is how she performs best. We'll have a think as to whether we carry on with Artistic or retire her to stud this spring, as she is already a Gr1 Oaks winner."

Gondokoro Aims to Better Big Brother In Oaks

Friday, 31st May 2013

Video replays showed the luckless passage of Gr1 winner Zabeelionare in last year's Gr1 BRC Queensland Derby, when, despite a withering finish, he simply ran out of ground to finish a screaming sixth. If you believe in fate, in tomorrow's female version, the Gr1 Queensland Oaks, one-year-younger sister Gondokoro (Zabeel-Kisumu, by Carnegie) will be out for brotherly revenge. An unlucky second in the Gr3 The Roses last start behind Gr1 VRC Oaks heroine Dear Demi (who is out of a Zabeel mare), Gondokoro is the second foal in a looming family dynasty. Dam Kisumu has been to Zabeel every season in her first five years at stud and her yearling colt sold to Jadeskye Racing at this year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $420,000 from the draft of Yarraman Park. Then there are Gondokoro's two-year-old and weanling sisters still to make their mark. And when it comes to fate, trainer Pat Carey and jockey Rhys McLeod are no strangers to classic success. They teamed to take the 2012 Gr1 Australian Derby with Ethiopia.

Mapperley Stud To Stand Stallions Again

Friday, 17th May 2013

Waikato's Mapperley Stud has acquired Gr1 performer He's Remarkable (Pentire-Axiom, by Zabeel) for stud duty with the financial support and advice of Waikato Stud's Garry Chittick in a joint venture between the two parties, reports nzracing.co.nz. Stud manager Simms Davison, a retired professional rugby player, took over the reins at the Matamata farm with the future intention of a resident stallion on the property. "Mapperley has been a boutique agistment farm and it's been on my mind for a while to go to the next level, and I've been on the look-out for the right horse for a fair while. Garry made it clear that in his eyes the way forward was to take on a stallion and that led to He's Remarkable," Davison said. "He ticks all the boxes as a beautifully-bred horse who was Gr1-placed at three, four and five and we wanted a horse with Australian form. He's the type of horse I can be very proud of – he's a beautiful-looking animal, very correct and with a great chance of success at stud. There's been a few stallions here in the past and (champion sire) Volksraad stood here for $4,000 to kick him away." Placed in his penultimate run in the Gr1 NZ Bloodstock Insurance Stakes at Hawkes Bay, the Roger James-trained He's Remarkable won the Gr3 Newmarket Handicap at Newcastle one start after winning the Gr1 Railway Stakes at Ascot in Perth where the WA feature was taken away on protest in the Stewards' Room. Also runner-up in New Zealand's Gr1 Two Thousand Guineas behind champion Jimmy Choux and placed in both Moonee Valley's Gr2 Crystal Mile & the Gr3 Wellington Stakes, He's Remarkable retires with 6 wins & 5 placings from 22 starts for $573,075 earnings. He was a NZ$360,000 yearling at the 2009 NZ Bloodstock National Sale at Karaka. He's Remarkable will stand his first season at Mapperley Stud at NZ$4,000 + GST.

Recently retired multiple Gr1-winner Ocean Park (Thorn Park-Sayyida, by Zabeel) will join the outstanding line-up of stallions at the Chittick family's Waikato Stud in New Zealand. Add to this, the fact that he is a Cox Plate winner, as was our sire Savabeel, and you can pretty quickly see why we were just so keen to retain him for New Zealand's sire ranks." Manawatu Breeders Stakes Attracts Quality Field

Friday, 12th April 2013

Today's Listed Manawatu Breeders' Stakes at picturesque Awapuni in New Zealand has again attracted a quality line-up. The WFA race for fillies and mares consistently unearths gallopers with even further group potential, many often going on to campaign very successfully in the same year's Brisbane Carnival. Two recent examples would be 2011 winner Scarlett Lady (Savabeel-On Call, by Ironclad) who went on to capture the Gr1 Queensland Oaks in 2011 and again win at the elite level in the Gr1 New Zealand Stakes in 2012, while 2009 victor Awesome Planet (Giant's Causeway-Dance On The Mon, by Fasliyev) went to Brisbane and took out the Gr3 Doomben Roses. Today's installment has assembled a strong 11-horse field, headed by last start Gr3 Cuddle Stakes winner O'Fille (O'Reilly-La Fille, by Grosvenor). Also making their presence felt will be 2012 Gr1 New Zealand Oaks winner Artistic (Darci Brahma-Artless, by Dahar) and 2012 Gr2 Counties Cup winner Jeu De Cartes (Stravinsky-Prized Gem, by Prized). Beautifully bred and emerging filly Irish Dream (Savabeel-Trocair, by Flying Spur), a sister to Gr2 Brisbane Cup winner & Gr1 Caulfield Cup placegetter Tullamore, also looks likely to be highly competitive.

No Stud Decision Yet For Ocean Park

Tuesday, 9th April 2013

The future stud home of highly commercial entire and 5-time Gr1 winner Ocean Park (Thorn Park-Sayyida, by Zabeel) remains in limbo after his retirement was forced by a tendon injury suffered in the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free (1800m) on April 1, reports theinformant.co.nz. Presently stabled in the UK at Jane Chapple-Hyam's Abington Place, before heading into a mandatory three weeks of quarantine, trainer Gary Hennessy addressed both the state of the injury and the potential array of stud suitors: "Looking at the leg you wouldn't know there's anything the matter with it, all the heat's gone and he's skipping around his yard without a care in the world… If he was a gelding you'd be making plans for once he's recovered, but the fact is he's a colt, he's proven himself and I'd never forgive myself if I did the wrong thing with him. It's unfortunate, but it's the wise decision to retire him… There are a couple of parties that we're talking to but nothing has been confirmed yet… There's still a bit to work through and I've got to include my two partners in any decisions."

Clash Of Rising US 3YO Stars

Friday, 5th April 2013

In what has historically been a pivotal form reference for the Gr1 Kentucky Derby, this Saturday's Gr1 Wood Memorial (1.125 miles) at Aquaduct Racetrack will pit unbeaten 3YO colts Verrazano (More Than Ready-Enchanted Rock, by Giant's Causeway) & Vyjack (Into Mischief-Life Happened, by Stravinsky), reports bloodhorse.com. With the new point system in play dictating the Kentucky Derby order of entry, the Wood would guarantee a position in the 3YO Classic, let alone "proving which one is the potential superstar and the frontrunner for favoritism in the Kentucky Derby". Verrazano, who has won his first 3 starts by a combined margin of 27- lengths, currently heads betting markets as the prohibitive 4-5 favourite with Vyjack at a quote of 4-1. Let's Go Stables' Bryan Sullivan, co-owner of Verrazano shed some light on the race and was ebullient in his praise for his colt: "Facing Vyjack and some of the others is going to be a tall task… We're trying not to get caught up in everything and are just concentrating on our horse. He's doing very well since the Tampa Bay Derby (Gr2), and we're just looking for a good run from him. Tampa was a step up in class and got him used to new surroundings, but now he's got to keep stepping up… "I've been around Todd (trainer Pletcher) for 15 years and I haven't seen a horse who keeps his condition and trains like this horse does… He has a great mind, which he gets from More Than Ready. He sleeps a lot and eats a lot. This is the position you want to be in. If you can't get excited by this you shouldn't be in this business."

It's A Dundeel Rated Equal To Pierro

Friday, 5th April 2013

NZ-trained 3YO colt It's A Dundeel (High Chaparral-Stareel, by Zabeel) has been rated Timeform's equal highest winner of the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas in the last 20 years, alongside Octagonal, reports racingandsports.com.au. The rating of 125 puts It's A Dundeel equal second of the 3YO crop with Pierro (Lonhro-Miss Right Note, by Daylami) with both behind top rated (128+) All Too Hard (Casino Prince-Helsinge, by Desert Sun). It's A Dundeel is now one win away from becoming the first horse to complete the Randwick/Rosehill/Derby triple crown since the Randwick Guineas replaced the Canterbury Guineas in 2006. The main danger to It's A Dundeel in the Derby would appear to be VRC Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar (Hotel Grand-Cryptic Miss, by Snippets), who is rated 122 by Timeform and who races the older horses in Saturday's BMW at Rosehill.

Lucky Unicorn is already the sire of multiple group-placed NZ filly Capital Diamond (Lucky Unicorn-Diamond Smile, by Zabeel) from his first crop, while in Hong Kong his first runner Flying Unicorn won a Griffin on debut by 4-lengths at Sha Tin.
