Stallion Spartacus Dies At Cangon Stud
NSW Hunter Valley-based Cangon Stud has suffered a blow with the death of newly imported stallion Spartacus (Danehill-Teslemi, by Ogygian). Champion 1st Season Sire of New Zealand where he stood at The Oaks, and the sire of 6 individual stakes-winners (2 at group level), Spartacus was standing his 1st season in Australia but was found dead in his paddock late November. A lengthy post-mortem found he had died from complications arising from a ruptured aorta. The multiple Gr1-winning 2YO had attracted mares from both Victoria & Queensland. Cangon Stud principal Jaime Mackay commented: "It has been a huge loss for all of us as he has been so well received by breeders as he had so much to offer. We now look forward to the arrival of his foals in 2013. With his passing the search has already started to find a suitable replacement for next season.
First Opportunity To See Spartacus
NSW Cangon Stud's Irish-bred Danehill sire-son Spartacus (Danehill-Teslemi, by Ogygian) will be on view to the Australian public for the 1st time on September 15. Leica Falcon Offers Rejected
Meanwhile exciting 4YO gelded stayer Leica Falcon (Nothin' Leica Dane-Lady Peregrine, by Scrupules) "continues to attract large offers, but his owners are not selling" reported thoroughbrednews.co.nz. Leica Falcon (who finished 4th in the recent Gr1 Melbourne Cup & 5th in the Gr1 Caulfield Cup) boasts 5 wins from 10 starts for $461,525 prize-money (with victories including last month's Gr2 Winning Edge Presentation Stakes over 2400m at Caulfield). Leica Falcon "was the subject of a reportedly large offer from connections of the Lee Freedman stable before the Melbourne Cup" & co-owner Margaret Eaton confirmed the latest offers "have been as significant as those before the Cup" but noted: "We do not want to sell him. We have stuck by Richard Freyer (current trainer). He has done a good job & he has some big plans for the horse. We hope to have this horse for many years." Eaton added Leica Falcon is due at she & husband Alan's Albury property for what may be a long spell: "It might be a significant spell, as he has some growing to do. So I am not sure how long it will be."
