On cue, a half-brother to US-bred 5YO entire and recent Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux-Dalicia, by Acatenango) has been foaled at Shadai Farm in Japan this week, reports bloodstock.racingpost.com. The colt (the 6th foal of her 12YO German-bred dam – remarkably all colts), is by super-sire and 7-time Gr1-winner Deep Impact (Sunday Silence-Wind In Her Hair, by Alzao). Amicable Parting For Team Valor Trainer
Team Valor, part owners with Darley and Arrowfield Stud, in future shuttler & US-bred 5YO entire Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux-Dalicia, by Acatenango), have parted ways with the recent Gr1 Dubai World Cup's trainer Graham Motion, reports bloodhorse.com. In what appears to be an amicable decision, Animal Kingdom will stay with Motion, but all of Team Valor's North American-based horses will move to the stables of Rick Mettee. Mettee will train privately for Team Valor, an option Motion says wasn't open to him: "I have room for about 80 at Fair Hill and I imagine we'll be full. The Team Valor barn was a separate situation, so it's not going to affect me in that regard. It was always set up as a situation I could walk away from and that's what I've chosen to do. Barry (Irwin of Team Valor) is looking for a private trainer and that's what he needs, and Rick Mettee is going to be the perfect man for that spot. It's a good opportunity for him and I'm just extremely grateful for the last couple years I've had. It doesn't get any higher than winning the Derby and the Dubai World Cup. It has been two years that I wouldn't trade for anything." Irwin commented: "Due to the unique type of operation we run with partnership-owned horses, we feel at this time it would serve our needs better to have one trainer that was exclusive to our stable. Graham agrees. He has offered to continue to train our horses through the month of April until our new trainer has set up his operation."

Cambridge's Lucky Unicorn Relocates To WA
Sunspeed studmaster Phil Ibbotson and NZ Cambridge Stud Principal Sir Patrick Hogan have joined forces and will stand 9YO stallion Lucky Unicorn (Redoute's Choice La Bamba, by Last Tycoon) at Westbury Park in Pinjarra, Western Australia, this season. The stakes-winning son of multiple Arrowfield Stud Champion sire Redoute's Choice will stand for a fee of $4,400. An excited Ibbotson commented on the move and the well bred entire's upside to the WA market: "He's off to a good start at Cambridge Stud… He covered 141 mares in his first season and a total of 556 mares in five books – Sir Patrick is adamant there's plenty more winners in the pipeline… And, as part of our association, Sir Patrick will also send four Lucky Unicorn foals across to Perth… They are all from Zabeel mares and will be entered for the 2014 Perth Magic Millions." Lucky Unicorn is already the sire of multiple group-placed NZ filly Capital Diamond (Lucky Unicorn-Diamond Smile, by Zabeel) from his first crop, while in Hong Kong his first runner Flying Unicorn won a Griffin on debut by 4-lengths at Sha Tin. Ibbotson also noted that Lucky Unicorn is likely to nick well with WA's more precocious mare population commenting: "Sir Patrick feels he will click much better with our speedier mares and his runners will also be better suited on top of the ground in Perth instead of the heavier tracks in New Zealand."

YPR Joins Partnership In Gr1 Prospect Vadashan
Only weeks after forming a strategic alliance with the Redoute's Choice Club, Young Professionals in Racing (YPR) has secured a share in exciting Gr1 hopeful Vadashan (Redoute's Choice-Vadsalina, by Sagacity). YPR chair Kathryn Thomson is thrilled with the development and commented: "This is a fantastic opportunity for young people on the fringe of racing who may be considering racehorse ownership in the future. YPR's involvement with Vadashan provides a social and educational alternative to the sometimes daunting responsibilities associated with racehorse ownership, yet enables members to experience all the excitement of racing a horse they feel connected to." She added: "We are truly grateful to Arrowfield and their partners in Vadashan for their support of this initiative and look forward to working together to achieve a strong future for the thoroughbred industry, through increasing awareness and participation in racing… It's also very fitting that Vadashan is by Redoute's Choice, given that YPR has recently joined forces with the Redoute's Choice Club."

The two new clubs officially merged in February, and will work to encourage the next generation to become more involved in thoroughbred racing. Kathryn Thomas, YPR chair was upbeat at the suite of racing and breeding options now available to members and commented: "Having the Redoute's Choice Club team onboard also allows us to present a comprehensive event program that will make YPR membership essential for any young professional looking to develop their knowledge and have more fun with racing." Meanwhile, Arrowfield Stud marketing and projects manager Vicki Leonard, who helped found the Redoute's Choice Club in 2012 added: "It makes sense for two such similar groups to work together and build on the good work that has been done to further our industry for young people's benefit… Our strength is access to information, industry people and events like trackwork, sales and stallion parades, and we will continue to provide all of those special contacts and experiences for YPR members." Racing NSW CEO Peter V'Landys praised the alliance and indicated it offered "a visible and attractive gateway" to the broader thoroughbred industry for young people who might otherwise never discover it.

Gr1 Winner Eagle Falls Euthanased
In a blow to Australia's upper echelon sprint racing circuit, Gr1 Oakleigh Plate winner Eagle Falls (Hussonet-Desina, by Desert King) had to euthanased at trainer David Hayes' Euroa property yesterday morning following a severe sesamoid injury during trackwork, reports racingnetwork.com.au. Eagle Falls, a 7YO son of former 6-time Chilean Champion Sire Hussonet (Mr Prospector-Sacahuista, by Raja Baba) who relocated from Arrowfield Stud in the NSW Hunter Valley to stand the last Australian breeding season at Cornerstone Stud, competed at the top level across multiple seasons and captured, in addition to the Gr1 Oakleigh Plate, the Gr2 Salinger Stakes and Gr3 Rubiton Stakes. He also finished runner-up in the Gr1 Newmarket Handicap and Gr2 Alister Clark Stakes and 3rd in the Gr1 Manikato Stakes. His career of 37 starts netted 8 wins and 3 placings for $1.078 million in earnings. Hayes lamented, "He smashed his sesamoid while galloping and we had to put him down for humane reasons… It's a terrible shame because he was very close to being retired… It's not as if he was a young horse but he had never shown any weakness in that area before – it's just one of those sad things that happens in racing."

Australia's Thoroughbred Industry Clears AI Hurdle
Australia's thoroughbred industry cleared a significant hurdle yesterday when Justice Tony Robertson ruled against former bookmaker and chairman of the Sydney Turf Club Bruce McHugh's challenge to existing rules preventing artificial insemination. The long-running case, which has cost McHugh and the industry a significant amount in legal fees, had left the thoroughbred sector in limbo leading into next year's yearling sales. The outcome, off the back of buoyant global trade, augurs well for next month's opening round of sales in Australia and New Zealand. Industry reaction was understandably jubilant. Here, sourced from a number of media outlets, are some of the comments:
- Michael Duffy (Australian Racing Board chairman): "The ARB has maintained throughout that naturally bred thoroughbreds were the basis of the domestic and international sport of racing and AI proponents were free to establish their own industry as they wished... The long running case has created an element of uncertainty in the industry which will lift following this decision."
- John Messara (Arrowfield Stud principal & Racing NSW chairman): "It keeps us within the international community of racing because they were international rules and in effect, Australia would have been out of line with the rest of the world..."
- Michael Ford (Australian Stud Book Keeper): "This is the right decision and we are pleased that the effect of the courts decision is to protect the integrity of the Stud Book and thoroughbred breeding in Australia... Because of the global market for breeding and racing of thoroughbreds, and the rules on artificial breeding in other jurisdictions, the introduction of artificial insemination into Australian thoroughbred breeding would have had serious consequences for our industry..."
- Adam Sangster (Swettenham Stud principal): "It's a huge relief for the Australian racing economy... think that globally, logic came through, and one only needs to look at the standardbred [harness] industry and the decimation of their breeding industry [in Australia] to imagine what it would have done to thoroughbreds; it would have been a disaster..."

Stud Coup 1: Arrowfield Acquires Animal Kingdom
In a significant coup, Arrowfield Stud "has acquired a majority interest in the breeding rights to Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux-Dalicia, by Acatenango), the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner and US Champion 3YO Male, who will begin his stud career in Australia next September and likely shuttle to the Northern Hemisphere beginning in 2014." Arrowfield has pointed out that the deal, brokered by Robin Bruss of Northfields Bloodstock, "is subject to Animal Kingdom passing importation protocols, which involve blood work that should be finalised in the next few days." Adding an interesting global twist to the deal, "The 20 Team Valor International partners that have reached racing's pinnacle with the home-bred colt will maintain a significant interest in his stud career." US-based Team Valor already has substantial breeding and racing interests in South Africa. Recently finishing runner-up to Wise Dan in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile, Animal Kingdom is slated for the Gr1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap on 9 February as a prep for the $10 million Gr1 Dubai World Cup on 31 March, where after he could also race at Royal Ascot next June. Commenting on their new sire prospect, Arrowfield principal John Messara stated: "Animal Kingdom excites us as a rare kind of athlete with a truly international pedigree who is able to express his class on a range of surfaces. He is already rated among the world's elite turf milers and has the potential to become a global superstar in 2013." Meanwhile Team Valor CEO Barry Irwin commented: "Originally it was our intention to race Animal Kingdom for the entire 2013 season. However, the prospect of getting the support of John Messara's Arrowfield Stud in the southern hemisphere was so meaningful, that I advised my partners to sublimate their fun and take the deal. It is critically important to get a history-making stallion master behind a new prospect and in John Messara we have that. He has developed two of the world's most successful sires in Danehill and his son, Redoute's Choice. No way I was going to pass up this opportunity." With his only unplaced run coming in the 2011 Gr1 Belmont Stakes, Animal Kingdom currently has 4 wins (also including the Gr3 Turfway Spiral Stakes) & 4 runners-up (including the Gr1 Preakness Stakes) from 9 starts for US$2,327,500 earnings. His Kentucky Derby win is below.

Australian 'Blue Hen' Euthanased
Arrowfield Stud has reported the passing this week of regally bred broodmare Urge To Merge (Last Tycoon-Princess Tracy, by Ahonoora) due to laminitis. The 19-year-old mare holds the joint record (with Alinghi's dam Oceanfast) of having produced two $2 million plus yearlings while also holding the honour with Diamond Lover of producing a Gr1 winner from this rarefied price bracket. A full-sister to blue hen Tracy's Element (dam of recently deceased Typhoon Tracy who also died recently while foaling), Urge to Merge produced two individual Gr1 winners in Gr1 Champion Stakes (South Africa) victor Suntagonal (by Octagonal) & Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes winning colt Master of Design (by Redoute's Choice). Quite remarkably, the 6 yearlings to sell out of Urge To Merge following Suntagonal grossed $4,795,000 ($799,166 average). A $2.1 million yearling, Master of Design commenced his stud career this season at Victoria's Swettenham Stud.

Caviar Half-Brother Tabled For Easter
In major sales news, Inglis has confirmed that the yearling colt by Arrowfield Stud stallion & former Australian Champion Sire Redoute's Choice from dual Gr1 producing mare Helsinge will be offered by Ric Jamieson's Gilgai Farm at next year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale (9-11 April). Given the fireworks at last year's Easter Sale where Helsinge's 4th foal (now named Pippa) sold to BC3 Thoroughbreds for a hefty $2.6 million, this offering is sure to attract headlines leading into and during the sale. Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster enthused: "Being a half-brother to a Caulfield Guineas winner and by a champion Caulfield Guineas winner makes next year's offering an outstanding prospect, but you then add Black Caviar to the equation and you have the most anticipated colt in Australia's thoroughbred auction history."
Alzora Wins Listed Ethereal Stakes
Arrowfield Stud stallion & former Australian Champion Sire Redoute's Choice (Danehill-Shantha's Choice, by Canny Lad) added a black-type success when the filly Alzora (Redoute's Choice-Bryce Canyon, by Gulch) scored by 0.8-lengths for trainer David Hayes in the $120,000 Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) for 3YO fillies at Caulfield, over fellow fillies Summerbliss (Danehill Dancer-Distinctly, by Sadler's Wells) & Transonic (Casino Prince-Jet Past, by Jet Master). Alzora (a $115,000 yearling consigned by Emirates Park at the 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale) took her record to a win & 3 placings from 9 starts for $89,842 earnings.
