Heytesbury Stud Announces Ouqba For Stud

Wednesday, 5th June 2013

In local breeding news, leading Western Australia stud farm, Heytesbury Stud, have acquired well-credentialed stallion prospect Ouqba, a son of Red Ransom from the Machiavellian mare Dancing Mirage, a 2YO winner at her only start. Ouqba was raced by Sheik Hamdan Al Maktoum under his Shadwell Estates banner and was the top priced colt of his year at the Doncaster Yearling Sales. Winning twice at two years, Ouqba won his first start at three when victorious at Listed level at Newmarket followed by victory at Royal Ascot in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes. Resuming as a 4YO in the Gr1 Newbury Lockinge Stakes, Ouqba was beaten less than a length when runner-up to triple Gr1 winner Paco Boy, now a shuttler at Waikato Stud. Timeform rated Ouqba 122 as a 3YO, equal with 6-times Gr1 winner Midday and the French Guineas winner Silver Frost. Ouqba will stand for $5,500 at Heytesbury Stud. He will stand alongside Saxon, WA's leading first season sire and leading 2YO sire in 2011 and leading second year sire in 2012, as well as Husson Lightning, WA's leading first season sire in 2012 with yearlings selling to $100,000. Husson Lightning Adds Another Early Season Perth Win

Friday, 10th August 2012

WA Heytesbury Stud's young stallion Husson Lightning (Hussonet-Snip Snip, by Snippets) added another early season 3YO winner when the filly Cheval Grey (Husson Lightning-Solange, by Surtee) scored by almost 1-length over 1000m for trainer Simon Miller at Belmont in Perth. Cheval Grey is the second Husson Lightning to score over Belmont's 1000m scamper in less than a week, following undefeated Tempestuous Strike's win by a big margin last week. Husson Lightning Strikes Early In New Season

Thursday, 2nd August 2012

WA Heytesbury Stud's young stallion Husson Lightning (Hussonet-Snip Snip, by Snippets) got the new season off to a flyer when 3YO colt Tempestuous Strike (Husson Lightning-La Lollabrigida, by Dauberval) scored by 3.25-lengths over 1000m at Belmont in Perth yesterday. Fittingly, Tempestuous Strike was Husson Lightning's 1st winner when victorious in November last year. Sent to the spelling paddock despite beating a hot field on debut, the decision looks likely to handsomely reward connections for their patience. Husson Lightning won the Gr3 Maribyrnong Plate over 1000m at Flemington, and his 6 placings included runner-up on debut in 2006's Listed Breeders Plate over 1000m at Randwick, plus 2007 runner-ups in the Magic Millions Classic over 1200m at the Gold Coast, Gr2 International Animal Health Silver Slipper Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill, Gr3 Skyline Stakes over 1200m at Randwick & Listed Concept Sports Stakes over 1410m at Flemington). Husson Lightning is standing the 2012 season for $5,500.

Migrant Community Search For New Vic Jockeys

Friday, 23rd July 2010

The Victorian racing industry "will comb migrant communities in an unprecedented drive for children likely to grow to be jockey-sized," reported The Herald-Sun. Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Des O'Keeffe confirmed an "alarming drop in student numbers at Racing Victoria's apprentices' school" & an "even more worrying increase in the size of students" were forcing RV to "re-write" its recruitment strategy. He noted the industry was "looking for prospects in local Asian & European communities" because the "smaller stature of some Asian & European groups made them priority targets". The newspaper also noted: "Poor student enrolments & growth trends suggest jockeys of Anglo-Saxon stock will all but disappear unless the weight scale is radically revamped. The current minimum is 53kg & the minimum top-weight is 59kg." In recent years, prominent riders Michael Pritchard, Nicholas Ryan, Vincent Hall & many others "have been unable to squeeze under the weight scale & retired in their early 20s". Leading sports scientist Dr Melissa Arkinstall "supports targeting migrant groups, but also supported significant adjustments to the weights". She noted: "The smallest people aren't as small as they used to be. My belief is that unless racing is proactive about this, it's in trouble."
