(Commands – Dextrous, by Quest for Fame)
Stood 2013 at Cornerstone Stud for $6,600
A tough son of Commands, Ambidexter was often thrown in the deep end as a racehorse. He won his maiden fresh up as a 3YO and after that, the colt only raced in stakes company. Ambidexter contested five Gr1 races, running second in the Gr1 Epsom and fourth on three occasions – Gr1 Rosehill Guineas, Gr1 Randwick Guineas and Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes. He also won the Gr2 Theo Marks Handicap, beating Fal Al (who turned the tables in the Epsom at their next start). All up, Ambidexter was pitted against the best company and was right up there with the best of his generation.
Commands has been an excellent sire with 68 stakes winners, headlined by nine Gr1 winners. Not bad for a horse that, like Ambidexter, was a Gr1 placed, group winner. Among his Gr1 winners are horses like Commanding Jewel, Epaulette and Appearance. But of them all, Gr1 Champagne Stakes winner Skilled is the most relevant here – he is the full brother to Ambidexter.
Their dam, Dextrous, won the Gr2 Sandown Guineas; and aside from Skilled and Ambidexter, she has also left Sidestep (Exceed and Excel) who was crowned Champion 2YO Colt in Australia a few seasons ago. They all trace back to champion mare Emancipation, whose best foal was Gr1-placed stakes winner Royal Pardon, and who has made a name for herself as a granddam of note.
Ambidexter has 36 live foals in his first crop.
