While the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale is the showcase of the National Yearling Sales Series the Select and Festival Sales have plenty to be proud of too, with an exceptional history behind them.
The Select Sale has produced the winners of 27 Group 1 winners in the past three seasons and the Festival Sale produced two Group 1 winners last season yet the sale average is consistently below $15,000.
Last season saw five individual Group 1 winners from the Select Sale including dual Group 1 Derby winner Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor), who added the Group 1 Caulfield Cup in the current season, along with Dal Cielo (NZ) (Per Incanto), Platinum Witness (California Dane), Shuka (NZ) (Bachelor Duke) and Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) (Tavistock).
Also winning at the highest level in the new season has been Tarzino (NZ) (Tavistock), a $45,000 Select Sale purchase who was victorious in the Group 1 Victoria Derby.
Two Group 1 winners last season appeared from the Festival Sale with Gaultier (NZ) (Rios) winning the Group 1 Levin Classic while Iamishwara (NZ) (Keenisky), an $8,000 buy, won the Group 1 WFA Classic and has earned over 51 times his purchase price.
The Select Sale is the largest of the three catalogues with 633 yearlings entered in 2016. There are 44 siblings to stakes winners catalogued including three siblings to Group 1 winners and four progeny of Group 1 winners.
With an average price of $45,000 each year, the Select Sale is value for money with last season’s five Group 1 winners earning combined prizemoney of over $3,600,000.
A one-day bumper sale of 298 yearlings has been catalogued for the Festival Sale on the last day of Karaka 2016. There is still black-type to found in the pedigrees at the Sale with nine progeny of stakes winners and eight siblings to stakes winners catalogued.
