BENFICA (AUS)(Lonhro-Hut, by Danehill)
Aquis Farm, QLD. Fee: $9,900

Benfica Overview

A Group One winning 2YO by Champion racehorse and sire LonhroBenfica combines the blood of the mighty Zabeel and Danehill.

Defeating subsequent Group 1 winning sprinter Hot Snitzel to win the Group One TJ Smith Stakes, Benfica is from the family of Group One winners Neroli and Riverina Charm.

He has already sired a Stakes winner in Eusebio who won the Canberra Guineas and another black-type performer in Benfica Princess from a very small first crop of runners. He also had Barbass, winner of the lucrative Inglis 2YO Challenge.

“Powerful, willing and sound”, three words trainer Cameron Crockett uses to describe the Benfica horses currently in work at his Mudgee stable, “I have one coming through the paces now, that could be better than all of them”. Having won with all horses by this Queensland based stallion, he is an advocate for the sire, so much so, he is sending his own mare to be covered by Benfica this season.

Benfica is standing at Aquis in Queensland for 2018 which promises to be an ideal match with his current progeny showing speed over the shorter distances.

The bay stallion having already established a reputation for throwing a good correct type, is known for upgrading his mares, as well as being a favourable option for maiden mares with the average birth weight in his foals being 56kg.

Benfica covered his largest book yet in 2016, the best is yet to come!

  • Already sired a Stakes winner in Eusebio who won the Canberra Guineas
  • Group One winning 2YO with looks to match his racing ability
  • By the emerging sire of sires in Lonhro and out of the fast Danehill mare Hut who was Group-performed on no fewer than three occasions
  • One of only two Group One winning juveniles sired by Lonhro, the other being Golden Slipper winner Pierro

  • Oaks Target For Benfica Princess

    Thu, 1 Dec 2016

The connections of talented filly Benfica Princess, a graduate of Rockhampton's Capricornia Yearling Sale, are hoping she can develop into a Queensland Oaks contender in the winter, reports Racing Queensland Webnews. Bred by Mary-Lee Trivett's Banchory Thoroughbreds, Benfica Princess (Benfica-Made Of Dreams, by Made Of Gold) posted her third successive victory for trainer Kelly Doughty when storming home to win a Class 3 Plate (1500m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday. Former Gr1 winning jockey Gary Doughty, stable foreman for his wife Kelly, was most impressed by Saturday's stylish win.  "For a three-year-old filly racing against all comers it was quite a special win," he said. "It is not easy to do what she did and to come from where she did in the field." He added: "I really think she will be better over further and believe she has the makings of a very good three-year-old who could later run a trip." By Aquis Farm stallion Benfica (Lonhro), Benfica Princess is a direct descendant of champion Australian mare Emancipation. Emancipation, a six-time Gr1 winner, has been just as influential off the track with her daughters and granddaughters producing numerous stakes performers including Gr1 winners Railings, Virage de Fortune and Rumya.
