At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Jindera Park's Gr1-winning stallion Duporth (Red Ransom-Staging, by Success Express) celebrated an elite race success when 4YO bay gelding Hey Doc (Duporth-Heyington Honey, by General Nediym) led throughout to score a surprise win at odds of 21-1 in the $1 million Gr1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, defeating In Her Time & Malaguerra. Hey Doc, who had to survive a protest from the runner-up In Her Time, improved his record to 8 wins (including the Gr1 Australian Guineas, Gr2 Stutt Stakes & Gr3 Aurie's Star Handicap) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 MRC Caulfield Guineas, Gr3 MRC Manfred Stakes & Gr3 VRC CS Hayes Stakes) from 18 starts for $1,760,900 in earnings. Winning trainer Tony McEvoy told the Sydney Morning Herald: "We just decided to sprint him and not fight him. I said to Luke [jockey Luke Currie], 'Just let him run'." McEvoy added: "We didn't plan to lead but he got there he just kept going and he had a lot of fight there at the end." There was plenty of controversy surrounding the race with champion sprinter Chautauqua scratched at the start after getting his leg over the gate. Team Hawkes tweeted two independent vet reports on Saturday that cleared Chautauqua of any injury.
