At Randwick in Sydney, Darley's deceased shuttler & Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) celebrated an elite race success when his 6YO champion daughter Winx (Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl, by Al Akbar) sauntered to the line 7-lengths clear for trainer Chris Waller in the $600,000 weight-for-age Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), defeating 4YO entire Prized Icon & 5YO gelding Classic Uniform. Having her first start since winning a record equalling Gr1 Cox Plate last October, Australian racing's queen was allowed to lope along near the rear by regular pilot Hugh Bowman. Sooled into the race turning towards the business end of the mile, where she ambled up like a Bentley on a Sunday outing with Bowman relaxed at the wheel, Winx effortlessly raised the bar by establishing a new Australian record of 16 Gr1 victories en-route to winning 23 straight. Having broken Black Caviar's Gr1 win record with her third Chipping Norton Stakes achievement, the mighty mare appears to have the Sydney autumn, and possibly English racing at her mercy. Her next start is expected to be in the Gr1 George Ryder Stakes, where she is on track for another Gr1 feature race treble. "It's always a concern to see how horses come back. To see her come back like this is pretty special," said Waller, whose emotion was clear to see. "She's getting the imagination of Australia. It's a great way to portray our sport." Now the winner of 27 of her 33 starts, with record southern hemisphere earnings of just under $16 million, Winx's record of 16 Gr1s will take a long time to be broken.
