Australian breeders place a currency on speed like few others, so in that respect no one will be surprised Telemon have been monitoring Jungle Cat since his triumph in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint.
“It’s a straight 1,200m on turf that has been attracting some of the best Aussie and international sprinters for a number of years.” explained Joe Heather. “We liked that Australian competition would give our breeders an easy marker by which to measure the winner.”
Runner-up to Jungle Cat in the Al Quoz, Stormy Liberal, returned to the US and defeated North America’s finest in the Breeder’s Cup Sprint (G1), whilst Jungle Cat earned a ticket to the Spring Carnival.
He was set a daunting task in his first Australian start under handicap conditions over 1,400m in the G1 Rupert Clarke Stakes. Despite carrying top-weight, Jungle Cat won with authority to post his second Group 1.
In his final run before entering stud, the Godolphin flyer faced a world class field of sprinters down the Flemington straight in the VRC (Darley) Sprint over 1,200M at weight for age. He would dead heat for 3rd with Pierata, defeating Redzel, Brave Smash, Kementari etc. “That run was the absolute clincher for us” explained Heather. “Considering the horse was on the other side of the world a month or two before that run, you just had to be amazed by his quality. Horsemen know how hard it is to travel, so for him to put up a performance like that coming back in trip, we knew he was the whole package: speed, temperament and durability.”
Jungle Cat was a Group 2 performed British 2YO and is the fastest son of the successful dual hemisphere sire Iffraaj who already has 9 G1 winners and was responsible for 23 2YO winners in season 2018 alone.
Iffraaj, who has a proven affinity with Danehill blood, is an emerging sire of sires with his son Wootton Basset responsible for Champion European triple G1 winning 3yo Amanzour who will shuttle to Cambridge Stud in NZ this season.
A multiple Group 1 winning speed horse with an outcross pedigree ready made for the Australian mare population, Jungle Cat is an exciting addition to our stallion ranks in 2019.
