Cup Hopes Placed In UK Gr3

Friday, 2nd September 2005

Meanwhile in the UK, barely 12-hours ahead of the release of this year's Melbourne Cup weights, 4YO stallions Andean & Maraahel (who are both entries in this year's Cup) finished 2nd & 3rd in the Gr3 Strensall Stakes (9 furlongs) at York, reported racingpost.co.uk. The race was won by Susan Magnier & Michael Tabor's lightly-raced 4YO entire Mullins Bay (Machiavellian-Bella Colora, by Bellypha) who survived a protest to defeat Godolphin's Andean (Singspiel-Anna Matrushka, by Mill Reef) & Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum's favourite Maraahel (Alzao-Nasanice, by Nashwan). Meon Valley Stud-bred Mullins Bay (ridden by Kieren Fallon for Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O'Brien) is a half-brother to English & US Gr2 winner & sire Stagecraft, & was a 525,000 guineas (A$1.365m) yearling at the UK Tattersalls Houghton Sale; he now has 3 wins & 3 placins in 7 starts for £150,489 (A$361,000) earnings. In the Melbourne Cup, runner-up Andean (trained by Saeed Bin Suroor) has been given 51kg & 3rd-placed Maraahel (trained by Sir Michael Stoute) has been given 57kg.
