Vinnie Roe Same Cup Weight As Last Year

Friday, 2nd September 2005

Also among the Melbourne Cup weights announced yesterday, last year's runner-up Vinnie Roe (making his 3rd trip to Melbourne) will again carry 58kg (the same weight as in 2004). The top-weight of 59kg was given to the Dale Romans-trained Kitten's Joy (a 2-time Gr1 winner in the US & 2nd in last year's Gr1 Breeder's Cup over 12 furlongs). The Elie Lellouche-trained Champion French stayer Westerner (a 5-time Gr1 winner & unbeaten in his past 6 starts, including England's Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup over 2.5 miles at York ahead of fellow Melbourne contenders Distinction & Vinnie Roe) was given 58.5kg. Distinction (6th last year) is up 2.5kg to 56.5kg & handicapper Greg Carpenter noted: "He is 1 of the most progressive stayers in the northern hemisphere, which he showed with his run in the Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup & win in the Gr2 Goodwood Cup." The Mike de Kock-trained South African star Greys Inn (winner of the South African Derby) has been given 56.5kg.
