Alinghi Aims At US Gr1 Turf Mile
Meanwhile the syndicate which now owns 4-time Gr1 winner Alinghi (champion 3YO filly in the just completed 2004-05 season) announced new plans for the 4YO mare's US racing program this year. Alinghi (Encosta de Lago-Ocean Fast, by Monde Bleu) "pulled up well" after her North American debut victory in last week's US$216,000 Gr3 Ballston Spa Breeders' Cup Handicap (8.5 furlongs on turf) at Saratoga in New York & trainer Bobby Frankel "will now aim her towards the prestigious US$600,000 Gr1 Shadwell Turf Mile (at set weights) at Keeneland on October 8". The Shadwell Turf Mile has never been won by a mare in 19 runnings. If all is well, Alinghi will then return to the US West Coast to contest the US$500,000 Gr1 Matriarch Stakes (8 furlongs) against fillies & mares at Hollywood Park on November 27. Part-owner Arrowfield Stud boss John Messara confirmed: "While Canada's Gr1 Atto Mile at Woodbine on September 18 had been on the agenda as Alinghi's next race, Bobby feels it is a little close to last week's race. As for the Gr1 Breeders Cup, there is a very high late entry fee, which has dissuaded us from taking that route. Bobby has suggested the alternative program & we are happy to go with it." Messara added Alinghi ((an $80,000 yearling at the 2003 Inglis Premier Sale who now has 11 wins in 17 starts) will "then be rested in anticipation of the 2006 racing season, prior to her return to Australia before the next Southern Hemisphere breeding season to be mated with Redoute's Choice".
