Goodricke Wins UK Gr1 Sprint Cup

Monday, 5th September 2005

In England, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's exciting 3YO colt Goodricke (Bahamian Bounty-Star, by Most Welcome) won the Gr1 Sprint Cup (6 furlongs) at Haydock Park, reported racingpost.co.uk. Goodricke (ridden by Jamie Spencer for trainer David Loder) defeated 4YO mare & last month's Gr1 Nunthorpe Stakes winner La Cucaracha (Piccolo-Peggy Spencer, by Formidable) & 6YO gelding Ashdown Express (Ashkalani-Indian Express, by Indian Ridge). Goodricke finished runner-up last start in France's Gr1 Prix Maurice de Gheest (1300m) at Deauville on August 7 & before that runner-up in the Surrey Stakes at Epsom on June 3; overall he now has 5 wins in 11 starts. He was a 110,000 guineas (A$286,000) yearling at the UK Tattersalls October Sale & is the 2nd Gr1 sprint winner for his dual Gr1-winning sire Bahamian Bounty (following the victory of his year-older brother Pastoral Pursuits in England's Gr1 July Cup). Bahamina Bounty stands at the English National Stud. Meanwhile Sheikh Mohammed said he will consider the US Gr1 Breeders' Cup for Goodricke, while runner-up La Cucaracha is being aimed toward the Gr1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin in December.
