Japan's Eye Popper To Melb Cup

Monday, 5th September 2005

Japanese 6YO entire Eye Popper (Soccer Boy-Sunday I) has been confirmed as heading to Australia for both the Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) & Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m). Eye Popper (trained by Izumi Shimuzu) is owned by Sunday Racing Co (which has its roots at the Yoshida brothers' 24-stallion Shadai Stud Farm). Racing Victoria director of racing operations Stephen Allanson noted: "The doors have well & truly opened for horses from both countries to travel to each others' racing carnivals. With recent projects such as the Global Sprint Challenge, this is a product of an enhanced relationship between the Japan Racing Association & Racing Victoria." To date Eye Popper has recorded 6 wins (all 2000m & beyond) & 7 placings in 15 starts; he will tackle the Caulfield Cup 1st-up. Last start he ran 3rd in the Gr1 Spring Tenno Sho over 3200m at Kyoto (the race in which dual Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva finished 7th) carrying 58kg; prior to that Eye Popper finished 2nd in the Gr2 Hanshin Daishoten at Hanshin carrying 57kg. Eye Popper (who is is expected to arrive in Australia in late September) has been given 54kg in both the Melbourne Cup & Caulfield Cup.
