Starcraft Wins French Gr1 Moulin

Monday, 5th September 2005

Australia's triple Gr1-winning 5YO entire Starcraft (Soviet Star-Flying Floozie, by Pompeii Court) added a European Gr1 triumph overnight with a 2.5-lengths victory over a star-studded field "after making all the running" & recording "the 3rd fastest time ever" (1min 36.1sec) in France's Gr1 Prix du Moulin (1600m) at Longchamp in Paris, reported thoroughbredinternet.com. Paul Makin's 2004 Gr1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) winner Starcraft (ridden by French jockey Christophe Lemaire for Newmarket-based trainer Luca Cumani) defeated Gorella & Major Cast, with multiple Gr1-winning favourites Whipper 4th & Valixir 5th. Starcraft's victory emulated his sire Soviet Star "who also won the Prix du Moulin & who now stands at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland, having retired to Dalham Hall in Newmarket & then in Japan". NZ Waikato Stud-bred Starcraft (an NZ $80,000 yearling at the 2002 NZ Bloodstock Karaka Premier Sale in Auckland) finished 3rd in England's Gr1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot at York in his European debut; overall he now has 10 wins (also including the NZ Gr1 Mudgway Stakes over 1400m & Australian Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes over 1600m) & 7 placings in 20 starts.
