Doncaster Day-1: Record Gross & Average

Wednesday, 7th September 2005

Overall on Day-1 at the Doncaster Bloodstock St Leger Yearling Sale,racingpost.co.uk summed up: “The buzzword 'selective' was being used by many, the clearance rate (90%) was healthy & several of the bigger players were in attendance.” There was “an air of trepidation among consignors as Britain's yearling auction campaign kicked off, but there were sighs of relief from many vendors as the fixture continued its upward curve. Most participants considered it a selective market, but demand for the better offerings ensured new 1st-day records for aggregate, average & median. This year's sale attracted most of the main buyers with agents such as John Ferguson, Charlie Gordon-Watson, Angus Gold of Shadwell & John Warren.” Doncaster managing director Henry Beeby commented: "The figures are particularly pleasing given that this session was 50% up last year on the same day. Our feeling was that any nice horses have sold well, although there was a degree of selectivity in there. It pleases us enormously to see all the main players represented here & we can look forward to the rest of the week with optimism & enthusiasm."
