Sweet Stream Heads To Melb Cup

Thursday, 8th September 2005

Meanwhile on the track at Doncaster overnight, "the Melbourne Cup is now the big target" for Team Valor's French-based 5YO mare Sweet Stream (Shantou-Snug Dinner, by Jareer) after her victory in the £100,000 weight-for-age Gr2 Park Hill Stakes (14.5 furlongs) for fillies & mares, reported racenews.co.uk. Sweet Stream (ridden by Thierry Gillet for trainer John Hammond) defeated the Aga Khan's front-running stakes-winner Kastoria (by Selkirk) & French Gr3 winner Songerie (by Hernando); last month's Gr1 Yorkshire Oaks winner Punctilious finished 4th. Team Valor's Mark Sulkes declared the mare "ran here to assess her prospects of staying the 2 miles at Flemington. This seemed an ideal race to test her stamina & she stayed the distance well." And jockey Gillet added there would be "no problem about the mare staying 2 miles". Whether Sweet Stream "will race again between now & November (the Gr1 Melbourne Cup is on Tuesday November 1) is very much up in the air, but she has been entered for France's Gr1 Arc de Triomphe & there is a race in Italy which could come under consideration". Sweet Stream (who has won up to 2400m & on ground varying from heavy to good to firm) was off the track for 8 months between her run in Hong Kong last December (when 4th to Phoenix Reach) & her win in France's Gr3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville last month. Italian-bred Sweet Stream now has 7 wins in 17 starts, with 3 French stakes wins including the 2004 Gr1 Prix Vermeille at Longchamp.
