Maryland Cuts 2006 Dates To Increase Purses

Friday, 9th September 2005

The Maryland Jockey Club & Magna Entertainment (which operates Pimlico & Laurel Park) "plan to slash the number of live racing dates in 2006 to 112 (from 200 in 2004 & 2005) in an attempt to bolster purses & level the playing field with surrounding Mid-Atlantic tracks that use expanded gaming to increase purses," reported bloodhorse.com. The proposed 2006 live racing schedule would contain 94 days at Laurel Park & 18 at Pimlico. The MJC estimates US$34 million would be available for purses in 2006 with a total daily distribution of US$303,571; in 2005, US$38 million was available with daily purses averaging US$193,877.
