Champion Mare Pebbles Dies In Japan
In Japan, Darley announced the death of 1985 US champion turf female (& 1st British-based winner of a US Gr1 Breeders' Cup race) Pebbles (Sharpen Up-La Dolce, by Connaught) "due to the infirmities of old age" reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Pebbles (now 24 years old) had been resident in Japan since 1996 & was pensioned at Darley's Fukumitsu Farm in 2002. Pebbles won England's Gr1 1000 Guineas in 1984, followed by both England's Gr1 Eclipse Stakes & Gr1 Dubai Champion Stakes before "closing her racing career with a victory over males in the 1985 US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf (12 furlongs) at Aqueduct" by a neck over Australian-raider Strawberry Road & lowering the turf course record to 2min 27sec. Overall Pebbles won 8 of 15 starts for US$1,419,632 earnings.
