Doncaster Day-3: $260,000 Ishiguru Colt

Monday, 12th September 2005

Trainer Bryan Smart (buying for Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum) out-bid Simon Callaghan (son of trainer Neville Callaghan) & paid the Day-3 top price of 100,000 guineas (A$260,000) for a colt by 1st season sire Ishiguru (out of Cumbrian Melody, a winning daughter of Petong & producer of 6 winners including Listed-placed Golden Bounty) at the Doncaster St Leger Yearling Sale, reported racingpost.co.uk. The colt had previously been purchased by Mags O'Toole for Eddie O'Leary's Lynn Lodge Stud for just 32,000 guineas (A$83,000) as a foal in December. Smart summed up: "I fell in love with the horse, he was gorgeous & a great mover. And I am very grateful to Sheikh Rashid for backing me & allowing me to buy some nice horses this week." Ishiguru was Danzig's most expensive yearling of 1999 when sold to Demi O'Byrne for US$1.15 million at the Keenland July sales; he won Ireland's Gr3 Miller Flying Stakes at Leopardstown as a 3YO & now stands at England's Tweenhill Farm in Gloucestershire. He began southern hemisphere shuttles to Australia in 2003 before shifting to NZ's Chequers Stud in 2004; Chequers has purchased a 50% "interest in Ishiguru, which gives it controlling rights in the southern hemisphere" noted NZ Thoroughbred Marketing.
