Monday, 12th September 2005

In England, Coolmore's 9YO dual-Derby winning 2nd season sire & former NZ Windsor Park shuttler Montjeu (Sadler's Wells-Floripedes, by Top Ville) added another European Gr1 success when Michael Tabor & Susan Magnier's favoured colt Scorpion (Montjeu-Ardmelody, by Law Society) scored a front-running victory in the Gr1 St Leger (14.5 furlongs) for 3YOs "in heavy conditions" at Doncaster, reported thoroughbredinternet.com. Scorpion (ridden by Frankie Dettori for trainer Aidan O'Brien) defeated fellow colts The Geezer (Halling-Polygueza by Be My Guest) & Tawqeet (Kingmambo-Caerless, by Caerleon). Scorpion (unraced as a 2YO) has had 6 runs this year (for 3 wins) & last start won France's Gr1 Grand Prix de Paris (2400m) in course record time (2min 24.3sec) on July 14 at Longchamp; earlier in the season he also finished 2nd (behind Hurricane Run) in the Gr1 Irish Derby at The Curragh in June. Meanwhile 3rd-placed Tawqeet (trained by John Dunlop) is entered for the Gr1 Melbourne Cup.
