Belmont Record To Unbeaten Shakespeare

Tuesday, 13th September 2005

Undefeated 4YO colt Shakespeare (Theatrical-Lady Shirl, by That's A Nice) set a course record in winning the US$200,000 Belmont Breeders' Cup Handicap (9 furlongs on turf) by 3.5-lengths at Belmont Park, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Shakespeare (ridden by Jerry Bailey for trainer Bill Mott) ran 1min 45.06sec to defeat Meteor Storm & Muqbil; the old record was 1min 45.35 set by Golden Commander in the Gr2 Kingston Handicap on May 15 this year. Kentucky-bred Shakespeare now has 4 wins in 4 starts (all on turf); he is 1 of 4 winners from as many starters out of Gr1-winning dam Lady Shirl.
