US Turf Champ Mac Diarmida Euthanased
US 1978 Champion Turf Horse Eclipse Award winner Mac Diarmida (by Minnesota Mac) "has been euthanased due to advancing health problems at age 30," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Florida-bred Mac Diarmida (sire of 4 stakes-winners) stood 13 seasons at Cashel Stud in Ocala before being pensioned. During a brilliant 3YO campaign in 1978, Mac Diarmida won 12 of 14 starts (7 graded stakes); the triumphs included the Gr2 Lexington Handicap at Belmont Park (beating John Henry, despite carrying 14lbs more than the 2-time US Horse-Of-The-Year), Gr1 Canadian International Championship at Woodbine (beating the older horses) & Gr1 Washington D.C. International at Laurel Park (in his final career start: he "kicked a tack box & wrapped a tendon" while preparing for his 4YO campaign). Overall Mac Diarmida won 12 of 16 races & earned US$503,184. At stud he sired 73 winners (40%) including stakes-winners Furzy, Sir Mac, Motorcade & Quadrigeminal.
