Thursday, 15th September 2005

In Ireland, former star racemare Blush With Pride (1st of 4 Gr1 winners from Blushing Groom's landmark 1st crop) has died aged 26, reported bloodhorse.com. She was sent from the US to Ireland in 1997. Blush With Pride (richest of the 4 stakes-winners produced from 1982 Kentucky Broodmare-Of-The-Year Best In Show) won 3 of US racing's most prestigious stakes for 3YO fillies in 1982 for Darrell & Lendy Brown's Stonereath Farm & trainer D. Wayne Lukas: the Gr1 Santa Susana Stakes (now the Gr1 Santa Anita Oaks), Gr2 Ashland Stakes & Gr1 Kentucky Oaks. She also won that year's Gr3 Golden Harvest Handicap & finished 3rd in the Gr1 Mother Goose Stakes; & in her final start, she ran 2nd (to subsequent champion older female Track Robbery) in the Gr1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland. Blush With Pride (a US$650,000 at the 1980 Keeneland July yearling sale) retired with 6 wins from 16 starts & US$536,807 earnings. As a broodmare, Blush With Pride produced 15 foals (9 winners); her 1st foal, a Nijinsky II colt, sold for US$3.2 million at the 1986 Keeneland July sale; & later foals included European group winners Turnberry Isle & Smolensk, plus US Gr2 winner Better Than Honour (who sold for US$2 million in-foal to Mineshaft at last year's Keeneland November breeding stock sale). Blush With Pride ended up in Ireland "after being bought in-foal to Deputy Minister for US$635,000 at the 1997 Keeneland November sale.
