US Live Foals Up 2% For 2005

With alternative gambling states New Mexico & Louisiana "enjoying booming success, & a steady breeding season in leading thoroughbred state Kentucky, the US Jockey Club reports a 2% increase nation-wide in reported live foals of 2005 to 37,025," noted thoroughbredtimes.com. With "increases in purse-money & breeders incentive programs made possible by money from alternative gambling", foals by New Mexico stallions increased 18.7% (to 731) while foals by Louisiana stallions increased 12.3% (to 1,635); in contrast Texas (which is located between those 2 states & does not offer alternative gambling) saw a 9.% drop (to 1,432 foals) for 2005. The leading state in breeding activity Kentucky enjoyed a 2.5% increase (to 14,141). Other states in this year's Top 10 which showed increases include Florida up 2.6% (to 4,084), Maryland up 1.9% (to 997), Oklahoma up 0.7% (to 692) & Washington up 26.2% (to 640). Besides Texas, the other 2 Top 10 states that showed decreases in live foals were California down 1.3% (to 3,707) & New York down 3% (to 1,504).
