Melb Cup Doubt For Bazelle

Monday, 19th September 2005

A decision will be made this week whether NZ-trained mare Bazelle (Zabeel-Show Games) continues her Gr1 Melbourne Cup campaign. Trainer Paul Jenkins told NZ Thoroughbred Marketing "the most likely scenario is that this year's Gr1 Auckland Cup winner will be returning home for a spell". Bazelle (who finished an eye-catching 3rd in her 1st Melbourne outing over 1600m at Caulfield on August 20) was withdrawn from the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday & Jenkins explained: "Unfortunately she picked up a fetlock injury during her last race in Melbourne at Flemington on September 3, which has put her spring campaign in jeopardy. It's a terrible shame because I had been happy with the progress she had been making in Melbourne; but this problem has put her behind the eight ball & may take too long to come right." Bazelle is already fully qualified for the Melbourne Cup (& prior to Saturday was 37th on the order-of-entry); Jenkins had hoped to follow in the footsteps of his brother Brian, who won the 1998 Gr1 Melbourne Cup with Jezabeel (Zabeel-Passefleur).
