Mnemosyne Wins Tea Rose Stakes

Monday, 19th September 2005

Coolmore-based sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek, by Star Way) added another stakes victory when his Woodlands Stud-owned daughter Mnemosyne (Encosta de Lago-My Juliet, by Canny Lad) made it 3 successive group wins in a month after prevailing in a thrilling 3-way photo-finish to the $140,000 Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes (1500m) for 3YO fillies at Rosehill. Mnemosyne (ridden by Darren Beadman for trainer John Hawkes) grabbed victory in the last stride to win by a nose from last season's champion juvenile filly Fashions Afield (Redoute's Choice-Attire, by Wild Again) with a further short-halfhead to Sydney Owner (Octagonal-Shand, by Quest For Fame). Mnemosyne (a $400,000 yearling at the 2004 Inglis Easter Sale) now has 4 wins (also including the Gr3 Silver Shadow Stakes over 1200m at Randwick on Aug 20 & Gr2 Furious Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on September 3) & 3 runner-ups in 9 starts for $640,600 prize-money. Mnemosyne has now won the initial 3 legs of the Sydney Spring Carnival Princess Series (Silver Shadow, Furious & Tea Rose Stakes); the last leg is the $350,000 Gr1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 1, with a $200,000 bonus for a filly that wins all legs.
