NZ$1.05m Colt Wins Debut

Monday, 19th September 2005

Former Coolmore shuttler & ill-fated multiple champion sire Danehill (Danzig-Razyana, by His Majesty) added an exciting juvenile victory when NZ$1.05 million colt Don Garcia (Danehill-Beyond The Sunset) "took his 1st step towards a start in the world's richest 2YO race, Australia's Gr1 Golden Slipper Stakes, with a brilliant winning debut in the Hawke's Bay Premier Juvenile (800m) at Hastings" reported thoroughbrednews.co.nz. Don Garcia (ridden by Michael Walker for trainer Mark Walker) ran 45.52sec to win by 3.25-lengths from fellow colts IfIonlyhadtime (Postponed-Red Letter Day) & Mon Reve (Stravinsky-Almaz); & prior to his official debut, Don Garcia "had made a big impression winning 2 trials: at Te Teko & Taupo". Don Garcia's part-owner & Te Akau Stud principal David Ellis declared: "He is the 1st & only horse I've ever nominated for the Golden Slipper. He can really gallop & we are looking forward to lining him up in black-type company." A more immediate target is a start in the NZ$30,000 Listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m) at Trentham on October 22. Ellis purchased Don Garcia for NZ$1.05 million (from the draft of Pencarrow Stud) at this year's NZB Karaka Yearling Sales; he was named after 16th Century viceroy of Sicily, Don Garcia de Toledo.
