Melbourne Cup 1: Collier Hill Tops Ballot

Thursday, 22nd September 2005

Last Saturday's victory in the Gr1 Irish St Leger has catapulted Collier Hill (Dr Devious-Polar Queen) past all other nominations in the ballot order for the Gr1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), to be run on Tuesday November 1. In defeating The Whisting Teal and Irish star Vinnie Roe (also confirmed for the Melbourne Cup), Collier Hill became the 1st horse exempt from the ballot but has been issued a 1.5kg weight penalty from Racing Victoria Limited chief handicapper Greg Carpenter. The penalty increases Collier Hill's weight to 56.5kg, handicapping him on a par with fellow internationals Distinction and South African-bred Greys Inn. It still leaves him weighted 1.5kg below Vinnie Roe, runner-up last year to Makybe Diva.
