Alinghi To Start In Shadwell Mile
Arrowfield Stud confirmed last night that champion Australian mare Alinghi (Encosta de Lago-Oceanfast, by Monde Bleu) will make the next start of her US campaign in the prestigious Gr1 Shadwell Stakes over a mile at Keeneland on turf. For 3YOs and upwards, the October 8 event carries US$600,000 in prizemoney, and is sponsored by Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum's Shadwell Farm. Alinghi's jockey, Edgar Prado, has won 2 of the last 3 runnings of the Shadwell Mile, while trainer Bobby Frankel was victorious last year with Nothing To Lose. Frankel also won the race in 1999 with Kirkwall. Only 1 mare, Weekend Madness, has won the race to date. "Bobby says that Alinghi is very well at present and will be very competitive in the Shadwell Mile," commented Arrowfield supremo John Messara. "It would indeed be an achievement if Alinghi could triumph against the males at the mile, as she has done over sprint distances." Alinghi's existing program calls for her to race again on November 27 in the Gr1 Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park, again over a mile on turf, but this time against her own gender.
