NZB Inaugural China Sponsorship

Monday, 26th September 2005

In Asian news, NZB has announced it will sponsor a race in China for the 1st time next month: the Gr2 NZB Red Cross Cup (1600m) for 4YOs at Beijing racecourse on October 29. NZ Thoroughbred Marketing noted: "Following the announcement by the Beijing Jockey Club that it has been granted a licence by the Chinese Government to offer on-course gambling on horseracing for the next 12 months, China inches closer to being a major player in international racing." (Under the provisions of the licence, all profits will be paid to the China Red Cross.) NZB general manager Andrew Seabrook commented: "NZB is extremely proud to be involved with the Beijing Jockey Club in this way. We have had a good relationship with the Chinese horse racing industry & the Beijing Jockey Club for more than 10 years & we, like others, have identified the enormous potential in China, but have had limited opportunity in the past to offer our full support. In our view, the granting of the new gambling licence signals China's imminent explosion onto the international racing scene & our sponsorship is a way to show our support of the Beijing Jockey Club & the Chinese industry, as it takes the next step to becoming a internationally competitive horseracing jurisdiction."
