Gonbarda Wins German Gr1 Europa
In Europe, Gestut Auenquelle's home-bred 3YO filly Gonbarda (Lando-Gonfalon, by Slip Anchor) "overcame 3 trips into the starting gate to score her 2nd Gr1 victory of the summer" in Germany's €155,000 (A$248,000) Gr1 Preis von Europa (2400m) at Cologne, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Gonbarda (ridden by Filip Minarik for trainer Uwe Ostmann) "crashed through the starting stalls twice, but was quickly corralled & reloaded each time; once out of the gate, the bay filly displayed the form she showed in her victory (over older horses) in the Gr1 Deutschland Preis (2400m at Dusseldorf) on July 24" to defeat Gr2-winning 6YO gelding Simonas (Sternkoenig-Sistadari, by Shardari) by a head, with 3YO colt Salutino (Monsun-Saderlina, by Sadler's Wells) 3rd. Gonbarda entered the race off a runner-up finish to Darley's multiple Gr1 winner Warrsan in the Gr1 Preis von Baden (2400m at Baden-Baden) on September 4; she now has 5 wins & 4 placings from 9 starts overall for €428,330 (A$685,000) earnings. Gonbarda is 1 of 8 winners from as many starters for her unraced dam Gonfalon & is a half-sister to both German high-weight & Gr3 winner Gonlargo & to Gr3 winner Gonfilia.
