Barbaro Wins US Gr1 Florida Derby
In the US, Roy & Gretchen Jackson's undefeated Lael Stables home-bred colt Barbaro (Dynaformer-La Ville Rouge, by Carson City) "proved the track surface makes no difference" & "established himself as one of the horses to beat in the Gr1 Kentucky Derby" (on May 6) by notching his 5th successive victory in the US$1 million Gr1 Florida Derby (9 furlongs) for 3YOs at Gulfstream Park in Florida, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Barbaro (ridden by Edgar Prado for trainer Michael Matz) overcame a wide barrier draw to defeat Gr2-winner Sharp Humor (Distorted Humor-Bellona, by Hansel) by a half-length "after a stirring stretch duel", with a further 3-lengths back to Sunriver (Saint Ballado-Goulash, by Mari's Book). Barbaro had never previously raced on a fast dirt track: he won his initial 3 starts on turf (including the Gr3 Tropical Park Derby on January 1) by a combined 20.25-lengths & then added the Gr3 Holy Bull Stakes on a sloppy dirt track on February 4. Overall he has now won US$849,000.
