Claiborne Buys First Samurai Breeding Rights
The Hancock family's Claiborne Farm "has purchased breeding rights to multiple Gr1 winner First Samurai & will stand the son of Giant's Causeway at its Kentucky farm upon his retirement," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. First Samurai (out of stakes-winning Dixieland Band mare Freddie Frisson) "was a stand-out as a 2YO last year, winning the Gr1 Hopeful Stakes & Gr1 Champagne Stakes & finishing 3rd in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile". Claiborne president Seth Hancock commented: "First Samurai will be the 1st Storm Cat line stallion to stand at the farm. He was a brilliant 2YO & is an outstanding individual. He will be a good fit for a lot of mares at Claiborne." First Samurai has finished 2nd in both starts this year: the Gr2 Hutcheson Stakes & Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes (in which he was "placed 1st after Gulfstream Park stewards disqualified 1st-place finisher Corinthian for interference in the stretch"). First Samurai is being aimed at the Gr1 Blue Grass Stakes on April 15 at Keeneland & then Gr1 Kentucky Derby on May 6. To date he has 5 wins & 2 placings from 7 starts for US$892,575 earnings.
