Monday, 3rd April 2006

In South Africa, Elusive Fort (Fort Wood-Ever Seeking, by Secret Prospector) "came with a sustained run down the inside rail to win the Gr1 South African Derby (2450m) for 3YOs on a rain soaked turf course at Turffontein," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Elusive Fort (ridden by Mark Khan for trainer Geoff Woodruff) won by 1.25-lengths from Bennie Blue (Rich Man's Gold-Biloxi Blue, by Al Mufti) & Sun Screen (Rich Man's Gold-Tanover, by Model Man). Elusive Fort (who finished 2nd in the Gr1 South African Classic in his previous start on March 4) "was bred by Mary Slack's Wilgerbosdrift Stud, which also bred runner-up Bennie Blue & 3rd-place finisher Sun Screen". Winning sire Fort Wood (by Sadler's Wells) is a former South African champion sire (who produced 2 South African Horses-Of-The-Year: Horse Chestnut & Dynasty). Fort Wood stands at Mauritzfontein Stud in Kimberley, while Horse Chestnut stands at the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm in Kentucky.
