Brother Derek Wins US Gr1 Santa Anita Derby
In the US, Cecil Peacock's colt Brother Derek (Benchmark-Miss Soft Sell, by Siyah Kalem) "cemented his status as the probable Gr1 Kentucky Derby favorite (on Saturday May 6) with a powerful 3.25-lengths win" in the US$750,000 Gr1 Santa Anita Derby (9 furlongs) for 3YOs at Santa Anita in California, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Brother Derek (ridden by Alex Solis for trainer Dan Hendricks) led all-the-way to defeat fellow colts Point Determined (Point Given-Merengue, by Broad Brush) & A.P.Warrior (A.P.Indy-Warrior Queen, by Quiet American). Jockey Solis declared: "This horse is a monster! Just incredible. He keeps impressing me more & more each race he runs." The victory was California-bred Brother Derek's 4th consecutive graded stakes victory since his 4th-place in last year's US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile & his 6th career win (also including last year's Gr1 Hollywood Futurity, plus this season's Gr2 Dan Rafael Stakes & Gr2 Santa Catalina Stakes) from 8 starts for US$1,162,080 earnings. US bookmakers now have Brother Derek at 11-4 (in from 4-1) for the Gr1 Kentucky Derby, ahead of Barbaro at 6-1 & Bob And John at 9-1. The 3rd place-getter A.P.Warrior (who last start won the Gr2 San Felipe Stakes over 8.5 furlongs on March 19) was bred (& then sold for US$1.3 million as a yearling) by Australia's Tyreel Stud breeding duo Jim & Dean Fleming; he is the 1st foal from Irish stakes-winner Warrior Queen (purchased by the Flemings for US$2 million at the 2002 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale when in foal to A.P.Indy in her 1st year at stud). Meanwhile at Keeneland last September, Fleming sold Warrior Queen's 2nd foal (A.P.Warrior's Storm Cat half-sister) for US$3.8 million (highest-priced filly at the sale).
