Numbersixvalverde Wins UK Grand National Steeple

Monday, 10th April 2006

In the UK, Irish 10-year-old gelding Numbersixvalverde (Broken Hearted-Queen's Tricks, by Le Bavard) raced to a 6-lengths triumph against a maximum field of 40 in the world's most famous jumping race, the £700,000 (A$1.68m) Grand National Steeplechase (7200m over 30 fences) at Aintree in Liverpool. Numbersixvalverde (ridden by Niall Madden for trainer Martin Brassil) took the lead over the final fence to defeated the joint favourites, last year's winner & fellow Irish-bred 10-year-old Hedgehunter (Montelimar-Aberedw, by Caerwent) & French-bred Clan Royal (Chef De Clan-Allee Du Roy, by Rex Magna). At the finish-line, only 9 of the original 40 starters managed to complete the gruelling course. Numbersixvalverde (whom his Irish owner Bernard Carroll named after the address of his Portuguese vacation home) won last year's Irish Grand National.
