Grand Lodge Son Wins Macau Derby
In southeast Asia, ill-fated former Woodlands Stud shuttler Grand Lodge (Chief's Crown-La Papagena, by Habitat) added a group success when Australian-bred 4YO gelding St Moritz (Grand Lodge-Masked Goddess, by Marscay) scored a 1.75-lengths victory in the HK$2.6 million (A$430,000) Gr1 Macau Derby (1800m) at Taipa. St Moritz (ridden by Australian jockey Danny Nikolic for former Darwin trainer Steve Brown) defeated fellow Australian-bred gallopers Star Of Nittan (Encounter-Lady Maldine) & Crown's Master (Last Tycoon-Ranghiroah). St Moritz (a $40,000 yearling at the 2003 Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne) also won the Gr2 Macau Guineas (1500m) last start on March 19; overall he now has 6 wins from 11 starts for just under A$400,000 prize-money.
