Borrego Retired To Wintergreen

Wednesday, 12th April 2006

In the US, 5YO stallion Borrego (equal 7th-rated on the latest World Rankings) "has been retired after undergoing surgery to remove an ankle chip," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Borrego (who won both the 2005 Gr1 Pacific Classic & Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes in consecutive starts) will stand his 1st season in 2007 at Wintergreen Stallion Station in Kentucky. Trainer & co-owner Beau Greely confirmed: "Preliminary reports said that Borrego (El Prado-Sweet As Honey, by Strike The Gold) would be back in training 30-days-post-surgery; but then we were told the recovery would be lengthier than originally expected. Our goal was to start in the Gr1 Pacific Classic (August 20) & retire Borrego after the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic (November 4). With the extended recovery period, we would miss several races leading up to the Breeders' Cup, which would get us there less than 100% fit. In light of this & Borrego's value as a stallion, we have decided to retire him." Overall Borrego won 5 of 20 starts (plus 8 stakes placings) & earned US$2,052,090.
