Lawyer Ron's Dam Heads To Smarty Jones
In the US, 11-year-old mare Donation (dam of leading Gr1 Kentucky Derby contender Lawyer Ron) has foaled a filly by Irish-bred Elhayq at Kentucky's Three Chimneys Farm & "is now scheduled to be bred to dual US classic winner Smarty Jones," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Lawyer Ron (Langfuhr-Donation, by Lord Avie) won last month's Gr3 Rebel Stakes by 3-lengths & is favourite for this weekend's US$1 million Gr2 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park; overall he has 6 wins (also including the Gr3 Risen Star Stakes in January & Listed Southwest Stakes in February) & 4 placings in 13 starts for US$620,008 earnings. Importantly, after struggling in 5 starts on turf & 2 on Polytrack as a 2YO, Lawyer Ron has won all of his only 6 starts on dirt to become a prime contender for the Gr1 Kentucky Derby (May 6). His dam Donation was purchased privately by Reuel & Lavonne Huston "after her reserve was not attained at the 2003 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky December mixed sale." Their son Rob Huston said the decision to breed to Smarty Jones (winner of the 2004 Gr1 Arkansas Derby, Gr1 Kentucky Derby & Gr1 Preakness Stakes) was not difficult: "We are big Smarty Jones fans & Three Chimneys really liked the mating. We're planning to sell the mare in foal in November & we have seen the wonderful descriptions of the Smarty Jones foals. Our minds were made up after the Three Chimneys folks took us around one Saturday afternoon to see all the Smarty foals on their farm. They really look terrific." Three Chimneys matings advisor Anne Peters added: "The Smarty Jones-Donation match is a nice mating. It triples up on Somethingroyal, who was the dam of Secretariat & a real goldmine of good genes."
