Gallant Tess Wins Fernhill Handicap
Coolmore's Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a black-type success when his juvenile daughter Gallant Tess (Galileo-Dragoncello, by Diesis) defeated the males for a half-length victory in the $100,000 Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) for 2YOs at Randwick. Gallant Tess (ridden by Michael Rodd for trainer David Payne) defeated favoured filly Anamato (Redoute's Choice-Voltage, by Whiskey Road) & the gelding Theseo (Danewin-Ozone Sand, by L'Enjoleur). Gallant Tess (passed-in after failing to make her $60,000 reserve at the 2005 Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney) now has 1 win (plus 2 4th-placings) from 4 starts for $72,400 prize-money. Gallant Tess became Galileo's 9th 1st-crop winner (& 2nd stakes-winner, following Personify in the Queen Adelaide Stakes) in Australia this season.
