Headturner Wins Gr1 Aust Derby

Tuesday, 18th April 2006

Favoured gelding Headturner (Anabaa-Monroe Magic, by Zabeel) came from well back on the home turn with a withering burst down the centre of the straight to score an emphatic 2.5-lengths victory in the $2 million Gr1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) for 3YOs at Randwick. Headturner (ridden by Darren Beadman for trainer John Hawkes) defeated Gr1-winner colt De Beers (Quest For Fame-Chimeara, by Danehill) & fellow colt Testafiable (Testa Rossa-Jamelden Echo, by Prince Echo). Headturner (a NZ$125,000 yearling at the 2004 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale at Karaka) now has 4 wins & 4 placings (including an unlucky 3rd in the Gr1 Victoria Derby over 2500m at Flemington in October & runner-up in the Gr3 Norman Robinson Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield earlier in October) from 11 starts for $1,498,335 earnings. Headturner's yearling half-brother (by Viking Ruler) sold at Karaka in January for NZ$225,000.
