US Sire Afternoon Deelites Sidelined

Thursday, 20th April 2006

In the US, multiple Gr1-winning sire Afternoon Deelites (Private Terms-Intimate Girl, by Medaille d'Or) "is not expected to cover any more mares this year, after suffering a bad reaction to a strangles vaccination" reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Afternoon Deelites has spent the last 3 years at Clear Creek Stud in Louisiana (after entered stud in 1997 at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky "which retains a controlling interest in the stallion"). Clear Creek manager Val Murrell explained: "His fertility was excellent at the beginning of breeding season, but since his extreme reaction to the shot, laboratory tests have shown a lack of live sperm. Fertility specialists believe this condition will only last a couple more months & Afternoon Deelites should be back to normal for next breeding season." His top runners to date include Gr2 winners Deeliteful Irving & Miss Pickums, plus Gr3 winners Three Hour Nap & Lovely Afternoon; overall his progeny have earned US$14,958,673. On the track himself, Afternoon Deelites won 7 of 12 starts (including the 1994 Gr1 Hollywood Futurity & 1995 Gr1 Malibu Stakes) for US$1,061,193 earnings.
