Inglis Easter Day-3: $2.6m Encosta De Lago Filly
Coolmore representative Demi O'Byrne out-bid Sydney trainer Tim Martin & paid a new Australian record for a yearling filly at Newmarket when he outlaid $2.6 million for the full sister to 4-time Gr1-winning racemare Alinghi (Australia's 2003-04 champion 2YO filly & then 2004-05 champion 3YO filly who won 11 races & $3,540,924) during yesterday's final session of the 3-day Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney. The daughter of Coolmore sire Encosta de Lago (the 5th foal from Monde Bleu mare Oceanfast) was consigned by Scone-based Yarraman Park Stud as agent & O'Byrne (who confirmed the filly would definitely be heading to Alinghi's trainer Lee Freedman) declared: "I think she's as good a filly as I've ever seen at this stage. Hopefully she'll be winning the Gr1 Golden Slipper this time next year!" Yarraman's Arthur Mitchell (who sold the record-breaking Redoute's Choice-Deja Slew colt 24 hours earlier for $3 million) commented: "We've always been traders. We've been selling since 1970 & every dog has its day. We knew from inspections at the farm we had 2 good colts & this filly. There had been a lot of expectation about this filly: I thought she'd bring $2 million before the sale, but it's been a pretty nerve-racking time. She's been bought by the greatest judge in the world as you all know."
