Irridescence Wins HK Gr1 QEII Cup

Monday, 24th April 2006

In Hong Kong yesterday, 4YO South African mare Irridescence (Caesour-Meretricious, by Dancing Champ) grabbed victory in a 3-way photo-finish to the HK$14 million (A$2.3m) Gr1 Audemars Piguet QE II Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin. Irridescence (ridden by Weichong Marwing for trainer Mike de Kock) won by a head from NZ-bred HK-based 5YO gelding Best Gift (Bahhare-Shock Attack, by Inviting) with a further head to fast-finishing UK champion 5YO mare Ouija Board (Cape Cross-Selection Board, by Welsh Pageant). Runner-up Best Gift (now trained by expatriate Australian John Moore) raced originally in NZ as Carlisle Bay; he finished 3rd behind Ouija Board in December's Gr1 HK International Vase (2400m) & in his only 2 starts in 2006, followed with runner-up in the Gr1 Stewards Cup in January & 4th in the Gr1 HK Gold Cup in February.
